This is what is possible with an 80ED with the right modifications.

The small pic below is a single unprocessed frame. Notice very little vignetting. This is due to a crayford focuser with a clear aperture of 50mm. The original had a baffle near the front of the focus tube only 42mm in diameter which was causing vignetting.
The almost perfect flatness and stars at the edges and corners as good as stars at the centre is due to a Hutech focal reducer/field flattener (7887) with the thin spacer ring installed.

Details. Canon 5DH, 7X5min ISO 1600, 80ED at F 6.4, LPR filter,Hutech FR/FF 7887, stacked with Registar, adjusted for curves and levels in Photoshop. No gradient adjustment!

This little scope is now performing like a very expensive APO. This should also work for a 100ED! Next project?

Bert,

That's an excellent image, congrats. Really is nice.

Thanks also for posting the unprocessed frame, very helpful to see what it starts out like.

Roger.

That is absolutely stunning! And the scale of that full size image is amazing. I love the star colours, red giants in particular. I've snipped one out from near the left edge of the image.

You guys have missed part of the point this would work just as well for a 300D, 350D os 20D or any other camera modded or not. You would only need this

not the Hutech. The Hutech is needed for the 5DH so there is no vignetting. The Hutech is 50mm clear aperture.

I understood what you where trying to achieve Bert.
I still like the image though.......

Round stars and plenty of nebulosity there, well done.
With the focal reducer/field flattener (7887), whats the go with the thin spacer ring? is that to ensure proper distance from the image sensor plane?

OK Bert, how do we get them and how much is involved? the 300dmod could do with something like this ;-)

The 7887 comes with two spacer rings that controls the distance between the two optical elements of the FR/FF .
For 500mm FL no spacer
640mm FL thin spacer (this works fine for an 80ED 600mm)
800mm FL thick spacer
The recommended distance is 55mm from image plane and with their EOS adapter that screws onto the FR/FF that is what you get.

Strangely the 7887 works best with no spacer with my TAL 200K.

Thanks for that. They say the Baader Multi Purpose Coma Corrector a few of us reflector users have needs to be an exact distance from the image sensor, and to that end its threaded to go into a standard T Adaptor, so that when screwed in is the correct distance.

Great Image Bert!!

The unprocessed frame shows only the slightest vignetting in the very corners. There will be no stopping you now!

Cheers

I have just put together a picture with the Orion and Running Man Nebula with the Carina Nebula both at the same scale. That is both pictures full frame taken with the same setup 5DH 80ED with FR. Makes for an interesting comparison in apparent size.
