Hi all,
Im looking at buying a Vixen ed80sf and was wondering if anyone has owned or used one of theses scopes, the model im looking at is the older version which does not have the dual speed focuser, any info about this scope and prices of what it might be worth .

Graeme.
I have a Vixen ED 81 s Vixen scope, they are very good, mine does not the dual control knob either.I have used it for imaging and viewing,On all accounts it cannot be faulted.
It is made in Japan, not China as many of the regular 'ED 80's' on the market.Yes-it is dearer-but well worth it,Its been compared very favourably with the 90 mm Tak.Mine is listed in my insurance,as I could not live without it, if something happened to it!
I think I bought mine from 'Astro Optical' in Sydney. But Vince at 'My astroshop' in Harvey bay would be my choice to buy from. Those blokes there are very good.Think it was $1300-well worth it-vastly better than Cheap jobbies.
Hope that helps.
That particular scopes is a rebadged synta, not on of the the japanese vixens. Essentially it will be the same as a skywatcher, still, not a bad thing.

The Chinese ED80's still have a very good quality objective and lens cell and the focuser is functional so long as you don't want it to move heavy loads. Part of the price of the better brands is somtimes paying for the name, even though they usually have better quality components as well. Just depends how deep your pockets are and what your intended use is.
