Hey gang, forecast is not too bad and so my aim is to try and get much longer subs and more of them this weekend. I have a reasonable view of East/North and high South mostly above the meridian but some patches below. I can see scorpio and sagittarius above clearly (sans clouds)
I am looking for suggestions for what to shoot apart from getting more M8 M20 subs
I will be using an 80mm refractor mainly.
Any great nebula/cluster/galaxy ideas?
cheers

Our society target this month is the nebula around rho ophuicus (sp)
This apparently is a good target for widefield.
Why not give that a go ?

good idea Stu, so if I get Antares in the top right corner of my camera image on live view do you reckon that will encompass this region (DSLR 450D)? Or should I slew to p-ophicius (if that is in the named stars list)?

If you stay up late you can try to get an M31 in your 80mm...?

Re. M31
How late would that be from 42' south? I don't have Stellarium here at work so can anyone tell me how late this would be visible from Hobart?
(I have to work tomorrow as well so maybe ?Sat night)

To be honest Graham I have no idea as I havent looked at it yet myself due to a permanent cloud deck in the Illawarra !

Grahame

There is way too many to list but some of my favourites, apart from M8/20 in this region;
M16
M17
IC4628
NGC6188
M7
M6

All of these should fit nicely on your DSLR/ED80 combination.

Forecast for Sydney is rubbish followed by more rubbish followed by some more rubbish and then it gets really bad .

Have a good weekend, catch plenty of photons for us all and I look forward to seeing how you go.

Thanks Madders! I particularly like the idea of IC 4628. and NCG 6188. Just wonder what sort of shots I will get with an unmodified DSLR.
Good list of things to aspire to though. M16 needs some attention as well I have had poor goes at that in the past.
Thanks all

So does anybody know then that if I place Antares in the middle of my live view/ FOV on a 450D via 80mm refractor should I encompass the rho ophicius cloud complex? Or should I put antares to one(right side?)
I know I need lots of exposures & long subs, just need to know if I am in the right region in the first place..

must have jinxed myself anyway as there is a cloud bank you wouldn't believe just hovering over my house now anyway!

Graham, I put Antares to the right. This was at 200mm but your ED80 is much longer than this so I think you need to keep it right.

This is my attempt but at 200mm FL. http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=77951

Good luck - I'm stuck on a shutdown (14hr days until 25 Aug) and tonight is looking like a ripper :(

Hi Graham. Stellarium, which I think is free, is a great program for locating objects with an eye view. Makes it easy to locate objects and their relationship to others.
