View Full Version here: : What is the meaning behind your avatar?

richardda1st
13-08-2011, 10:45 PM
If you use an avatar, why is it a representation of you?

Come on, please explain.

I don't use an avatar, I personally like to see who I'm actually chatting to or who owns the post I'm reading.:)

Some members use a brand name of a product as a representation of themselves.

Others use a symbol of their main hobby or interest as a representation.

And others use a picture of someone else maybe well known, to represent them.

But some avatars are very esoteric:confused2:

Cheers:)

I've been wanting to do a thread like this for ages and now you've beat me to it Richard. :P
My thread was going to ask about usernames, some really interesting and strange usernames here- like renormalised for instance.. why do you call yourself that Carl.. why.. why .
If you don't mind Richard, I think it would be fabulous if people can explain their usernames also  :D

My new one is a rendition of the Lorenz Attractor .. a phase space diagram applicable to a chaotic system (like the weather). The trace which draws this pattern, never crosses any of the previous paths already drawn … in spite of the drawing complexity .. amazing stuff!

The "Initially Sensitive" title is one of the key hallmarks of such a system and if the initial conditions change, chaotic behaviour results.

Am I, and all life-forms, the result of chaotic processes ?

My user name is taken from the title of a song by Yes (from their second album 'Time and a Word'). It seemed appropriate at the time and is homage to on of my favourite bands. The night I joined IIS I emailed a friend and told him what name I'd chosen. Within minutes he replied with my avatar. It's a piece of Roger Dean artwork which was used on the cover of the triple-live album 'Yessongs', and I do think it suits the name. So I'm stuck with it :P.

For reference, here is the song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdCHJMpRA5Q and since I'm a truly awful wanna-be bass player, here is a transcription of the bass line http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3iQqNWzaCA

And in the ruins of the balloon
Stood a man with glasses held high,
Wondering when to do it again
Have another fly into the sky,
Somewhere flying high.

Astral trav'ller leaving without her,
Wandering where lights go,
Leave out the body load.

Once in the air, people who dare
Get a great respect in being.
(Astral trav'ller.)
Heavenly flight wondrous night
And all the sights worth seeing
Just believe in

Astral trav'ller leaving without her,
Wandering where lights go,
Leave out the body load.

From my Airforce day's .... we all had our turn to " marshall " an aircraft from the runway to the " holding/parking point".
I was with the Orion Squadron ( big 4 engine job .. turbo prop ).
You had to remain where you were ( you were not allowed to walk backwards ) .... you bought the aircraft towards you ... and you watched the front nose wheel .. and stopped the aircraft on the parking mark on the tarmac.

While your doing this .. 4 " screaming " turbo propellers were " bearing " down on you as the aeroplane got closer and closer  to where you were standing .... at the right moment you indicated to the Pilot to stop..... he would halt the plane and do an engine shutdown.

Ear Muffs were MANDATORY Equipment.

1st pic is the Orion Aircraft..... the rest tell the story.

Sorry for going a little off thread... but I couldn't resist after seeing Flashdrive's happy snaps!

Here is one I took during a typical day of work (our squadron was air to air refueling) ... three F18's off my window at 22000 feet about to take on fuel. I have heaps of pics I took... but mostly on old disposable cameras (remember those???) in case I took a pic of something I shouldn't have and would have to then ditch the camera! :)

My avatar is our current boat, a racey little Melges24, named "Arriba! Arriba!" that we keep at RPAYC on Pittwater.

I set my recently finished scope up one afternoon to cool off.
Awhile later I came back out to find 20 corellas forageing in the grass around it so went and got my camera, they all took to the wing when the camera clicked,,,I hadn't noticed there was one on top of my ota looking down at itself in the mirror,, actually I panicked shortly after this shot as I though the bird might of been chewing the wood.

Over a year or so they came back now and then , one bird would always climb around on my scope checking it out the others would all ignore it.

Yes Suzy the two threads could have gone hand in hand. Well at least it’s brought out Dave’s thread for a second look, thanks Ken.

There’s a real mixed bag of reasons for choice of avatar.

From Wikipedia - In computing, an avatar is the graphical representation of the user or the user's alter ego or character.

There was a house being built across the road and we scrounged some mirror tiles from the skip to use in the kids cubby house. We hosed them off and propped them up to dry. Later on I caught myself in one of them and had a chuckle at how I had warped so I grabbed a camera and took a few shots.

If I ever come up with something smart I'll change my avatar from the big chin to the big brain shot.

Trying to work out if I can change the cubby house into an oservatory now the kids have lost interest.

My surname is Budd so I got the nickname Buddman, no real mystery there.
