SO So SATURN 21st Feb 06

Hi All, had a go at Saturn last night with the C9.25.

Seeing was pretty bad, around 3-4/10 though toward the end of my run has improved a little to 4-5 out of ten for the result posted here. Best 1041 frames from 2000 at 10fps and 1/10s. I had to have gain up around 50% even at 1/10 s as transparency was pretty poor too. I've done better, but s'pose I've done worse too.

One at left was with LR deconvolution, at right without LR just some Soft Sharpen.

Mate why do you call these so-so?
I think they're great, especially the LR Deco version.

i know how you feel, if it not better than the last one after that initial registax run, then i almost delete the avi.

a day later, i come back and find that yes it is not too bad at all. With all the great jupiters and saturns over the last coupla months, this downturn in the seeing has to mean non perfect images.

we don't have to like it, just accept it. If i don't post my bad ones, asimov craps on me from a dizzy height!!!

They're OK. Not your best by a long chalk, but not bad.

I'll post one of my saturn's from last weekend shortly using exactly the same gear and we can compare.

There's real value in being able to compare your "average" shots with your best. It gives me a real measure of the effect of seeing and other variables, and for that I am very grateful.

So keep posting mate. They're all good.:)

I guess there's been so many outstanding images just recently ones like this pale in comparison ;)

good points from Matt and DP that we need to post our mediocre images and our shockers (and the conditions under which they were obtained) as it helps to put into perspective what the key factors that are missing but needed for the really stunning shots :confuse3: :)

I can't get near those 2 'so-so' shots with the scope I'm using so yeah, their nice! Good colour/CD/image scale.

With that many frames stacked I would have expected less grain, what do you reckon that's due to?

Not entirely sure but for me generally Gain = Grain, and as the transparency was poor I had to have the gain up around 40-50%. Might have pushed the sharpening a little too much as well :confuse3:. Unless the seeing's fantastic I always find it's a compromise between over sharpening to reveal detail which unfortunately brings out more noise as well.
