Hi all,

I was looking for something quick and easy to have a look around on night when i dont have enough time to lug out the big 12-incher, so, on advice from articles and members on here, i bought and just received a pair of Celestron 10x50 bino's. They were bought through E-bay store 'Ozhut' for $104 including postage.

The articles ive read suggest that 10x50 is a good place to start for a pair of binos, and for astro purposes, Porro prism is the way to go as opposed to wall prism.

These are fully coated, have BK7 prisms, and and a linear FOV at 1000m of 122m. They are also tripod adaptable, and have a near focus of 7.3m

So, i took them out tonight for a little while, and to be honest, after using my dob for so long, i wasn't expecting much, but i was wrong. I poked around Scorpio and along the milky way for a little while and was stunned at the clarity of the views. Open clusters suddenly appeared everywhere! :eyepop: These fairly dispersed groups of stars i'd viewed at low-to mid magnification through the dob were suddenly nice little compact balls at just the right magnification. There wasn't quite enough magnification to make out individual stars in most of them, but the bino's gave a great overview of their shape and location in relation to surrounding stars, and i'm looking forward to using them to locate some interesting areas to point the dob at.

Unfortunately ive got an early start tomorrow, so i didnt really have time to push them to some tougher targets, but the quick look i had tonight more than confirmed that they're a very worthy inclusion to my ever-growing collection of Astro gear.

Ive also got a 1.8m tripod and an adapter on the way to make things a bit easier.

I highly recommend them to any beginner.

P.S If anyone knows of some good binocular targets, please let me know.

Davin
