Was hoping to get a lunar avi or two inbetween Jupiter avi's on Saturday morning, but the dob is very hard to use to position on a crater of interest.. the movement is a bit sticky at the moment and without slowmo hand knobs (or goto), it's very difficult to find an interesting target.
So I got frustrated and only captured this one avi :)
I don't know what crater it is, i'll look up the atlas one day :)
well its a fine looking crater whatever it is :)
haven sen any moon stuff from you for ages mike :)
That's so cool Ice.
Good capture using the dob.
Image scale is great too and I love how the peak just shows through the shadow of the crater wall.
Gives it a real 3D look.
Did you use any sharpening on it?

It was a tricky one, but I think I've tracked down and identified two of the craters in your image Mike.

Thanks guys, and thanks for ID'ing them Tom! No wonder I didn't recognise them, never heard of them! :)
RB, they were processed in registax, wavelets lightly, and then some highpass filter and USM in photoshop.

Very nice shot Mike :) - what does the high pass filtering do?:confuse3:

Recognise the scenery? I was up at the same time on Saturday.

While i'm not a huge fan of my original image above, I decided to try a different processing routine for a lunar shot.
I took the TIFF file saved out of registax (after mild wavelets), took it into AstraImage and split into RGB channels, and took the green channel, applied a LR deconvolution (5/1.8) followed by a Medium unsharp mask and some gamma/contrast adjust.
I think the result is much sharper and shows more fine detail on the surface.
I might have to go back to some of my older lunar shots and see if the technique works well on those too.
Yes a much better improvement Mike.
Good choice on the green channel.
Wonder if it's worth doing all three channels?

I didn't recombine them - I processed the green channel and then saved just that one.
Apparently (I remember reading it somewhere ages ago) the green channel is usually the sharpest on the moon.
Yes I realise you've only used the green channel.
That's because it's the most sensitive channel.
From memory I think it has twice the number of pixels assigned to the green channel to correspond to the human eye's sensitivity.
I was just wondering if you would like to try doing all three and recombining all of them.
Might be worth a try.

oh sorry I misinterpreted your reply. And your explanation makes perfect sense - the ToUcam has it's pixels arranged in that fashion.
I don't see that recombining all 3 would make for a sharper image though, it'd be just like stacking less quality frames on top of the good frame. I capture the moon in black and white anyway so i'm not losing any colour detail.
Yes I see, you're right Mike.
