Just came back from a recent walk up fire-trails, through thick scrub, up some pretty steep scree-slopes, snow and rock to the peak of a prominent mountain 1440 metres high.
It was clear at the top and we saw all of Canberra's lights from north to south as well as a noticeable curvature of the earth's horizon. The clouds very quickly rolled in blocking any view.
It rained all night and in the morning the clouds had dropped, completely surrounding us to the point that we had to walk out on a compass bearing, as we could not see the way home by eyesight. A few blisters later, soggy and cold, but safe and sound back on the valley floor.
I got to try out my home-made yowie-suit and found it quite effective. Many an unsuspecting critter will now come within range of my lenses unawares.
1. Misty mountain hiding Canberra from sight
2. One of the nearby peaks of granite on our walk.
3. Looking towards Canberra between the layers of cloud.
4. Sunset casts it's golden light over the Canberra Deep-Space Tracking
5. It's not often you get to view Gibraltar Rocks from above!
6. Our target destination. Note the very steep scree slopes on the front covered in snow. That's our path.
7. Keeping warm for the night and also drying our wet clothes and boots. A big no-no in summer, but in the wet of winter it is pretty safe and sometimes essential.
8. My home-made yowie suit for laying in wait for wildlife. Still needs a little bit of work, but it is effective.
