David Malin made a few critiquing comments about the image so in light of those I did a repro when I got home and here it is:

I think it is an improvement.

The repros do look a bit better....sharper and with more natural colour overall (not so "neon" looking in parts).

Thanks JJ. I think it looks better - more balanced and less heavy handed with the colour.




Yes I agree. Its so easy with modern digital processing to go that bit too much for colour saturation.

I think the first one is fantastic and the second one is fantastic and the larger image is fantastic. Beautiful field of view.

Love the repro and I can understand why it's better. In the first one M42 is saturated to the max, especially the blues and sticks out like a fly on a white wall. It doesn't blend in the whole view as well as your repro. The red in the barnard loop doesn't match the red in the HH region and the red in the lower right of your field. In your repro it is color balanced nicely across the whole field. Finally the relative luminosity in different parts of the barnard loop is more homogeneous than in the first shot. You've also made the core of M42 brighter which is correct. When you look at the whole field it is a massive improvement so I got to say well done. :thumbsup:

I like both. For my personal taste, I like the latest version more, but I wouldn't say it's "better" just because it's less saturated - obviously that's not the only difference, but as far as saturation goes, it's all in the eye of the beholder.

The composition is also quite nice, almost as in a cascade of objects from M42 all the way to LDN 1622. Nice stuff!!

After listening to David's talk at AAIC, and comparing your two images, I can see what he is meaning.

"Respect" seems to be the word of 2011.

It's being used everywhere - my favourite is the Panadol ad, where they say it "respects the body".

A great effort and a very pleasing result. I too prefer the more subtle tones of the repro and it's always instructive to see the "big picture" that encompasses some familiar targets.
