My high precision worms arrived today for my one-piece worm blocks, so I have started pulling my mount apart to give it a good overhaul before installing the new gear.

I started with the DEC axis and everything was going swimmingly until it came time to attach the one-piece block to the mount. It attaches nicley, but once attached, there is no way to turn the worm by hand (using my little piece of dowel) to see whether there is too much / little backlash or binding of the gears. This is because the gearbox has to be attached before you fit the worm.

Has anyone else come across this before?

Also, I have discovered that I am missing the little socket head cap screws that attach the motor to the gearbox - can anyone please tell me what the size/thread of these screws is so I can try to get some?

Many thanks
Adam

Hi Adam

Perhaps this might help? http://helixgate.net/G11opw.html - as well there's information about the tests in regards to the performance of the OPWB

thanks for the replies guys. I will try to take some pictures to explain better what I am talking about.

I had come across that website Bill - it is very helpful, and was the one I referred to most when going through this process. With the old style worm / motor / coupler arrangement it was quite easy to feel whether the meshing of the worm with the main gear was too tight or loose by using a notched piece of dowel to manually turn the worm and feel the effort required to turn it as well as the backlash. It was a nice, direct way of seeing what it was like. But with the new setup, you can't get anywhere near the worm once it is installed and the only way you have of gauging it is how much play you have left in the axis once its all done up.

Thanks again
Adam
