Hello,

Had a clear night in Sydney last night so I put a 50mm lens on my modded Canon 350d and pointed it towards Scorpius.

I took 20 exposures x10min at 400asa. The lens was set to f4.

I took no dark frames nor used ICNR.

What do you think?

Thanks for looking.

Ross.

You've certainly captured a lot of nebulosity!

Another very nice Ha widefield. Well done Ross.

What type of Ha filter did you use and were you using the F1.8 or the F1.4 50mm lense? I really love my F1.4 50mm and this shot gives me some ideas for the future.

Darrin...

Doug(H) and Rick,
Thanks for your kind comments. I was pleasantly surprised at the level of detail and nebulosity I achieved from suburban Sydney skies with the moon present. I means I don't have to wait to get away to a dark site to get some decent images.

Doug and Marc, thank you. Your amazing wide field photos using SLR lenses has been an inspiration.

Darrin and Mighty_oz, I used a 15nm Ha filter that clips inside the body of a Canon DSLR. I used an Olympus OM F1.8 50mm lens set at F4. I am finding the 50mm gives a great FOV for constellations.

Darrell, yes, I was also surprised at the quality without Darks. I used DSS and the final image had noise and a lot of amp glow. However, when I imported it into Photoshop and deleted the Green and Blue channels, the amp glow and most of the noise disappeared!

Thanks.

Ross.

Nice amount of faint nebulosity is this shot especially wth no darks. Love the wide field!

Thanks Lucas.

It's a good way to keep the astroimaging momentum going in between those few trips to dark sites.

Ross,

Wonderful composition. I quite like the fluffy look and feel of the image. It's like it has texture.

Top stuff.

Hi Humayun,

Thanks for your encouraging comments.

I am just scratching the surface of widefield, Ha and DSLR lenses, however I am really enjoying it and will continue experimenting.

Don't ask me to repeat this shot. I put it through DSS, Photoshop and NeatImage, "pushing all the buttons" until it looked ok!

Thanks Paul,

It's good that I can do this from my back yard.

Cheers.
