I thought I'd put an end to this one. I've been collecting data over the last week or so, experimenting with exposure times and binning for narrowband. There's a total of around 20 hours data in this with subs ranging from 5 minutes for Ha to 30minutes for S2 so I went a little overboard and need to move on :) Also this is first light from the new orion OAG.
S2:9hours Ha:4hours O3:7hours approx with various binning levels. Bigger one here (http://starshed.celticcomputers.com.au/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/M16.jpg).

WOW - it impresses me no end Robin
Lovely work Robin
This is why I enjoy NB so much, a very dramatic image with wonderful colours.

Still a bit noisey in the Blue Dave considering the exposure times, probably over stretched. Are you at home, I thought you'd be at the Gold Coast?
I've been playing with some helix data as well Ric and it looks very much like a RGB image. Here's a preview, there's no S2 in it so I used Ha:O3:O3. Added a quick RGB to compare. Neither are finished.

Thats a good attempt but S2-30min subs should have given less noise, S2 is always a problem but colours are always dramatic with Hubble style mapping.

A great photo Robin.
So much detail and very sharp.

Both images look great Robin. Eagle is a treat with so much detail. It's a great target with so many wonderful images to compare against. Makes processing much easier when you have something to base it on.
Well done Mate. Looks like it's now all working.

Very nice. Absolutely love the colours focus and framing. Great detail! Well done. :)

The OAG helps a lot there Dave. It has almost eliminated flex, not completely, but almost.
I probably combed the data John. The temptation to overstretch is always there.
Again the OAG helps a lot at 1.6meters and a touch of selective sharpening too.
Doug, I created an action to hubblise the colours and another one to fix the stars. I just embedded directions directly off the net into actions :) Did little else there, I'm not keen on sitting in front of computers and I could do with a decent monitor as well. The OAG is working well at this FL but I had it running for almost 3 hours tonight before I realized the cooler was off  It's still not idiot proof
I just set the camera to zero degrees rotation and align it with pinpoint Paul. Then just cropped off the black bits :D The RC8 holds focus well though. Doesn't seem to shift at all. There are some elongated stars on the left of all the images which is actually the top of the sensor. I can't afford a new focuser just now

Robin, your Eagle shot is quite dramatic and really nice. I like the depth in that image so well done!

That much data gives a lot of detail. Colours are well saturated. The only thing letting the image down is the noise really. Some smoothing needs to be done and then the image will shine. Well done on collecting the 20 hours of data. Keep collecting data like this. I find it tempting myself sometimes just to let things go with lesser amounts and the images then don't look as good as they should.

fantastic work robin. All those hours of imaging was definately worth it

Cheers guys, M16 and M17 can make for colourful NB targets that's for sure but the hours of really long exposures you need for some targets can make for very boring imaging.
