Advice needed on Eyepiece

Hi all,

I am after some advice on an EP I am looking at buying. I have spent the last 2hrs looking at different brands and reviews, reading the IIS forums and the one that has caught my eye is the 5mm TMB Planetary EP. I have a Celestron Astromaster 130EQ (nothing to brag about from what I am seeing on here, :lol:) and I am wondering if this is a suitable EP for my telescope or can my telescope handle it? I am interested in looking at the planets so I was thinking why not.:question:

Hi Tammy, I am no expert in this region ( I don't think I am an expert in ANY region :P :lol: ) but I am looking at a similar option. Sylvain on here has 6 mm and 9 mm TMB Planetary EPs in the buy/sell section on here for $49 each I think so I've taken the plunge and am buying both based on the recommendations of others on here.

I have been dissappointed with the poor Plosslls i currently have in that range and need some magnification and quality for planets. They will be tested out on a 10", the 4.5" ( 114mm, pretty close to your 130 aperture ) and the wee 80mm which won't handle the 5mm according to most people but we'll see.

Not sure how Sylvains price compares with what you've seen around but I thought at that price even with postage over to NZ it was worth the effort.

Let you know what I think when they arrive ( and the clouds depart ). They are bound to be better than what I've got regardless so they will find use on one scope or another.

Hey Tammy,

Don't worry about the telescope you have. As long as you use it and get to see things you haven't seen before, than you are doing great :)

I have a slightly dodgy pair of 10x50's at the moment, but they show me things that I can't with my naked eyes!

The one I was looking at is on ebay (Aussie seller) and his are $30 dearer so I have PM Sylvains to see if there is any left. If not ebay it is. I didn't even think to look on the buy and sell section. Cheers for mentioning it

Hi Sean,

We are seeing things we haven't seen before (except on telly or internet) but now I am wanting to see them bigger, lol. Saturn and Jupiter are pretty small with what we have at the moment. But I did get to see the big four moons of Jupiter, wasn't ready for that one. (hubby didn't get out of bed for jupiter, his loss)

I'd recommed the 9mm TMB for your scope. Actually, I'd recommend it for any scope.
The 5 or 6mm models are going to be too much mag I think.
It's not perfect, but it's VERY good and a bargain.
Sylvain is entirley reliable.

thanks for your advice but it's a tad late. ah well. i received the 6mm today. Saturn is bigger and clearer and the moon is so HUGE, i couldn't get over it. but now the clouds have come over and interrupted my night. can't wait 'til i get a chance to have a look at Jupiter again. by mag i'm guessing you mean magnification?

Excellent. If you are happy with the eyepiece, than everyone else can just ****-off, regardless. :D
Its actually heartening to know that your scope can take a 6mm with no ill-effects.
They just keep getting better.
