Associate Proferor Rezhad-NezaHashemi Nezhad from the University of N.S.W. Institute of Science was reported in a Sydney Morning Herald article on 14/3/2011 that we "are too far" away. The article suggests we should have no concerns.
I don't know I am just a "Mug" one of those folk who battle to work out if what our media tells us is reality.

Anyways this "Mug" wonders is there any monitoring or it isn't done because we don't need to and will we be touched in any way.

I ask here because somehow I feel more trusting of the forum analysis given here by members who have demonstrated their knowledge and wisdom in the past.

Alex its always good to question what your told, regardless of who told you.
To answer your question there is environmental monitoring going on all the time in Australia. The Syncrotron in Melb constantly monitor air quality, as do other nuclear science bodies in the country (ANSTO, ARPANSA). Indeed, you have nothing to fear.
The other part of this is that the bodies of air between the northern and southern hemispheres do not mix. They approach the equator and swirl back around. As such, studies of soil samples in the southern hemisphere show radionuclides from atomic weapons testing by the British and French governments in the pacific region in the 50's. Soil samples in the northern hemisphere also show evidence of weapons testing around this time in the northern hemisphere but also of the Chernobyl accident in '86.

So two part answer:
1. Yes there is plenty of monitoring in Aust
2. Radiation from Japan will not travel to Aust

Well as a predictor of real estate trends the Southern Hemisphere may receive more interest in the future....marketed the right way.
Gee if those bodies can't get more funding for more testing stations I will lose faith in the system.

Southern hemisphere is the place to be - less fallout, Northern hemisphere pays us to dig holes in the ground and we have better skies.

We wore a lot from nuclear weapons testing in the 50's to

And likely much more still from the few very non publisised
(because they didn't detonate ) experiments regarding how the componants of nuclear weapons namely uranium , plutonium
behave when incinerated , compressed ,etc in the atmosphere.


I do have a book somewhere which shows the plume of the last of these
tests , 63 , which moves across western NSW and across SE QLD
I don't have the data at hand but do recall reading and filing in the grey box , " somewhere " as I was 4 weeks old at that time this occured.
