Sydney 2000 Olympics

Watching what little I have of the winter olympics, got me thinking this morning about Sydney 2000..

What were you doing at the time?

It was such an amazing time to be in or around Sydney.. I don't live in Sydney, but i'm only an hour or so away.. I went to see a couple of events (tennis, basketbal, some athleticsl), but in hindsight I wish I'd taken advantage of them being so close and gone to see more.. The problem was that most of the "popular" sports were so expensive!

We may never have an olympics in Australia again, in my lifetime.. (although I'm only 31).

The place I was working at at the time had a big screen TV in the "chill out area" near my desk.. The TV was basically on the olympics 24/7. Fond memories :)

You're right -- Sydney was just so awesome (but it always is) during the games. Everyone was so happy and everyone got on together without friction.

I went to a few indoor volleyball and hockey games and they were excellent events. I had been planning on going to the opening ceremony, but the asking price was too much, and I was 20 at the time, without a job and a poor university student. In hindsight, I wish I had made it somehow.

You're right about the events being somewhat expensive. As a result, my friends and I used to go down to Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour, where everyone would congregate and watch the games on the big TV screens there. Whilst in Darling Harbour, I remember seeing the queues for the nightclubs and dance parties. I've never seen a queue 300 metres long!

I hope we get them again some day.

G'day All,

I was in Far North Qld at the time being a tour guide. I saw the opening on our communal sat. TV but apart from that, nothing really. It was all very quiet where we were.

I found the olympics of '02 quite unescapable. I tried mind you but the bombardment was complete. I was told that we would benefit for quite some time from the olympics being held here but I am not so sure that we did... at least now we have some really good sporting facilities ;)
It was all good tho and the sports that were of interest to me i tried to watch on the constant TV coverage. :)

I missed the event that was of most insterest to me tho, mountain biking.... I did some laps of the course out at fairfield prior to the event when they had just built it :)

We can thank 9/11 for that !!! After that miserable event the world was never the same. Unfortunately Sydney and Australia missed a lot in what could have been a tourism bonanza.

We did end up with some excellent sporting infrastructure, but whether they are utilized to the max is another thing.

Cant believe six years have passed already :confuse3:Never managed to get over to Sydney but made up for it with the amount of TV coverage i watched .The opening ceremony was great and I remember being in a shopping mall watching cathy freeman race the 400m final with everyone abuzz and glued to some projection screens provided :)
