The clouds parted long enough for this shot, in between covering the gear during brief rain which was around :(
10 seconds @ ISO 800, Williams Optics FLT-132 and canon 7D.
This was one of the darkest eclipses I have seen to date :)

Sweet Shot!, Weather was garbage here. Managed to get a couple short glimpses but not long enough for any good pics :/

Beautiful shot. So many star occultations with stars in that one. Great depth!
Tried to get out but the rain headed in about 3:00 and gave up. Should have stuck with it. Couldn't find my cover for my gear.

Awesome!!
With your 7D at ISO 800, will noise become a serious issue? Mine seems to have significant noise problem even at ISO 640.
Any suggestion / comment?
thanks.

Great Shot you lucky swine, I stayed up most of the night trying to get a couple of images but all we had in the Swan Valley was cloud, cloud, rain and more rain

Fabulous image Grahame. You really made the best of the conditions.
I agree, it was darker than I was expecting. Fantastic to see the moon among the stars.

:eyepop:awesome awesome and awesome capture :eyepop:
Hopefully someday I'll gain the skill to capture such beautifully focussed eclipse shots.
The darkness of the total eclipse + dew made it frustratingly difficult for me to get a focussed image via my canon 400D + 300mm lens.
Well, will try again in Dec 2011.

Super pic, Grahame, I was working nights and every time I popped out it was cloud cover :( i had three girls on with me and none had ever seen an eclipse and I was really keen for them to see, but no luck.

Thanks all for your comments :)
Howard - last night was first light for the 7D, I used up to ISO 3200 and it was excellent at this iso too. I will have no hesitation using ISO 1600 for widefield work with this camera.
Shane - I focused using live view at about 2am and kept this focus all night - if I attempted to refocus during the eclipse liveview would have been useless it was so dim.
Im extremely happy i stuck it out with setting up the gear - evan while I was standing there with the umbrella shielding the scope/battery thinking "totality is in 20 mins... cmon cloud give me a break!"

Excellent image, just beautiful.
Mate, Awesome shot!
I didn't even get out of bed. Looked out the window, saw cloud and the rain on the car so went back to sleep :(
Nice new toy you've got there! gonna have to catch-up one of these days.

I only got a 10 second window, and had my Nikon at iso400 - I was hoping to bracket, but that's all I got for an hour. The old f15 UNitron 4" frames the moon quite nicely - but I'm seriously impressed with your image.

Andrew, part of my job is checking blood for sugar levels, it's only a little less red than your moon! ;)
Do you have any relies in the North of England?

Grahame,
Beautiful. We had plenty of opportunity down south and I ventured to Bunbury where there was plenty of time but I feel the moon was too high for us in the west to get some nice wide field shots.
Your photo is so realistic and for that well done!
I assume you are very pleased with the 7D? I am considering getting one as my 40D is being retired shortly.
Cheers,
Darrin...

Thanks again everyone - I have reworked the image with a slightly brightened background and uncropped for those who want to see the full field of FLT-132 and a 7D.
Darrin - yep i am very very happy with it - I also took some 1080 video of the moon just before the eclipse started and all I can say is WOW!
Arrgghh, I nearly got a heart attack !
Grahame, please don't post such images ;)
I think I'll stop astro-photo today :D
This one is even more awesome than its first release :)

Going way back to the 19th century, I believe we came from either Yorkshire or Fife - nobody seems to remember! Our family name has a knack of turning up all over the place.
The pic I posted is completely untouched, but to my eyes this eclipse was no redder than any I've previously seen. I rate Graham's image as far and away the best image I've seen of this eclipse, with the possible exception of the current APOD!

Hi Grahame
It was all cloudy in Buninyong where I am, and so I was hoping to find a good image online - yours are the best!
May I have a copy of yours ? - I will post on my web site attributed to you of course
It's ok if you would rather not - I just wouldn't take without asking...

Hi Grahame.
Someone on FB was suggesting this is a composite, but from what I can tell, it's a single exposure - is that right?

Congratulations on IOTW, well deserved, it's a cracker of a shot!

20-06-2011, 11:47 AM
Hi Mike, thanks for IOTW, this shot is defanetly not a composit, it is a 100% long exposure. I did up to 60 seconds too but they are not as nice as this :)
