A Flexible Mount

Hi,

I am looking at upgrading my equipment and would appreciate advice on a mount that would be capable of handing different types of telescopes for visual and photography uses.
I'm leaning towards to an equatorial mount but, I suppose the crux of the question is, how interchangeable are the different brands/makes?

Perhaps a "versatile" mount would be more appropriate than one that is flexible? :)
