Today's google logo with the "active strings" is pretty cool. just move your mouse cursor over the guitar strings and it plays notes.
click on the keyboard icon and you can play notes with the keyboard.
its in honor of the american guitarist les paul.
some amazing javascript in there.

It was to celebrate Les Paul's 96th birthday (he died in 2009)
For those that don't know who Les Paul is, he invented the solid body electric guitar (some acoustic guitars were already electrified).
He was also a pioneer with many of the Electric Guitar 'Sound Effects' we commonly use today.
I have a playable guitar app on my Android 'HTC Desire' mobile phone. They are fun to play.

I got the guitar strings displayed but the info about why it was there didn't appear in the usual fashion when I hovered over it. So thanks for filling us in.

It's not available any more Andrew.
But here is the story about it and a pic and some videos: http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-20070461-93/googles-les-paul-doodle-rocks-the-web/
I had fun with that logo the other day, I actually didn't sound half bad considering I could not play a note to save my life.:D
