along with a few others we had a lucky weekend after being invited to stay with a friend near Lake Glenmaggie in East Gippsland. it was cloudy across most of the state later on saturday night but in westerly winds we were on the right side of the divide and had clear skies all night.

i hadn't planned for the night very well so it was a late decision to choose NGC6188 prompted by somebody else. it wasn't until i finished the processing at home that i realised this is the same area as mike's fighting dragons in ara (can you tell i haven't imaged this area before? ;)). the HA component looks great on its own but still not all that happy with the colour balance after mixing 25% into this:

I like the result there Phil but as you say you can get a more impactful colour going.

What you've got there is your classic Ha as luminance red washout that turns the reds a bit salmon coloured.

Here is a detailed post of how I do Ha (for what its worth) its really one of two approaches but in the end they really do much the same thing.

My approach is Ha in red, Ha in blue (10%) in lighten layers and Ha in luminance using luminosity mode.

This essentially is the same as doing a blend of Ha and luminance and then using that as the luminance and combining Ha and red and using that as the red.

My way you can save it as a psd file with all the various layers and come back to it later if you don't like it.

You also control the red using curves. This is similar to Tony Hallas and Russell Croman tutorials on the subject.

I sometimes use a few other tweaks but not that important, this is the guts of it:

By the way I missed that 300mm EDIF, he sold it someone just before me. Its OK I can't afford it at the moment anyway.

thanks guys.

i went back and had another go. i already had some HA as red in a lighten layer etc but played with Greg's tips for awhile. in the end the thing that helped the most was increasing the contrast on my RGB data. i've also got my star colours back.. hadn't noticed how much i screwed them up in my haste last time. have updated the file at same link as before:

thanks Doug.. yes this bit of downpipe has served me well but i know an 8300 sensor is already pushing its limits. definitely can't take anything larger. i think this is one of the best images i've taken with it from a technical point of view.

Ah yes, there it is - gorgeous! A fabulous result.

I think that is one of those tweaks that some images need - the RGB layer needs the saturation boosted pretty high to survive the weakening effect of Ha as luminosity or even Ha as red and blue layers.

You shot this with the perfect field of view for this object.
