Using a Netbook, but protecting your night vision

Is it possible to have a colour scheme or setting to switch to, in order to preserve your night vision ?

I've seen the posts recommending a sheet of red gel, but is there a more high tech solution ?

I use a piece of red perspex on mine that I got cut to size a couple of years ago. Never looked back. Red gel, cello didn't hold too well. I even ended up masking all the blue/green leds on the laptop as when you get your night vision they tend to blind you.

Hey Marc, where did you get the red perspex from?
I have been using the red gel film from theatre lights but they are getting a bit worn and they keep blowing off
I found some perspex on line but it was only 195mm x 195mm

I don't think its going to help much Stu. Aren't most laptop screens backlighted anyway. Your still going to get white light through even with a colour scheme. (or so i've been reliably informed). Red Gel with a cardboard boarder and stick on velcro. :thumbsup: Has worked reliably for 4 years on one lappy and 3 on the other. I suppose one day i'll make a new one but so far haven't needed to.

Yeah I tried Knightvision, but still lots of white light comes through.
Looks like the perspex / Gel is the way to go

fifalite (http://www.fifalite.com/content.php?pg=home). They supply lighting industry quality gel sheets. I've been using them for years taking sheets to astrofest for people. A3 sheet used to be about $8.

I use some red filter sheet and photo leim glue to red out my iPhone for Astro use. Very effective at keeping it on and after the night the glue residue just rubs off without a mark. Might be able to do the same for a laptop or netbook.

For what it's worth, in my un-humble opinion, it doesn't matter what you do. Lowered intensity and red screens will not help. Your night vision is going to be ruined by these things. Please stop fantasizing otherwise, it's a waste of time. If you're going to be doing visual observations and don't want your night vision ruined, then don't use a laptop computer, iPad, iPhone, etc. Period. End of story. :sadeyes:

I use a piece of gel filter that I cut to size and laminated. You need to use a high temp laminator.

Now that I'm imaging and sitting inside the camper trailer tent I tend to just leave the screen as - can't see diddly when I walk outside though!
