Great Ocean Road/Vic, Pt 1

Hi guys. Fairly new to the forum and astronomy in general, but would like to share some images from a trip down through Victoria Shell and I took in March. I've selected what I thought were my better images, but still have a heap more to process so I'll just post a few for now :)

Appreciate and welcome any feedback and criticism, and don't worry I can take it - I know my images can be a bit too saturated or darkly lit for some people ;) (actually I got this HDR I can't wait to post just for you H :D)

Stunning images, Jason. Really love the first one.

I did the Great Ocean Rd in 2005 when I was but a babe with my photography and only had a point and click.

Would love to go back nowadays. Would see things a lot differently.

Cheers Mike :) Yep the first one is my pick also, got plenty more seascapes to come too. I've had similar experiences like that too, such as Carnarvon Gorge in central QLD... amazing place, if only I'd known then what I know now.

Glad you like them Ron, thanks mate! Sure is an awesome stretch of road.. I'm sure I could spend a few months shooting different sections along that coastline alone without ever getting bored. Certainly won't be the last time we do it :D

What gear did you use, and how much processing (if any) was applied to the first shot?

First one's a winner -- you caught that magical light. Awesome. :)

I foolishly went there at sunrise expecting to see something special. It was really, really bland and overcast. I posted my version here, it's several pages back, I think.

I didn't know you could get down at those angles at Beauchamp Falls. Will have to try next time. :)

And, please, hold the clown vomit filter image. :P

The first shot was mainly just contrast adjustments in raw, though I bumped the vibrance slightly as the raw seemed a little dull, and desaturated the yellow and red channel a little as they were a bit overpowering (probably from the vibrance adjustment in retrospect). Then in PS I did a levels adjustment on just the sky to darken it a little - even using 5 stops (or was it 6?) of grad filter when I shot this the sky was a little bright with the sun lighting it up. Then did a minor sharpen.

Apart from that there's nothing else, I have a polarising filter almost permanently attached to my lens which helps bring out the colours more/cut out the glare :)

Missed your post H. Thanks mate - we were really lucky for this sunset, we stayed in Port Campbell for 3 nights, all of which were overcast and rainy. We were actually parked at the car park just before this sunset while it was raining, walking over there in the rain and it cleared up just enough for us to shoot this (whilst wiping some water off filters etc :D) This was actually the first time the sun had shown itself the ENTIRE day (maybe even the day before too) which we didn't expect, so it was a special sunset for us, especially since the rain had scared off all the tourists.

Those falls are Hopetoun and Marriners, perhaps Marriners is the one that looks a bit like Beauchamp? Either way I got some Beauchamp ones coming soon, and actually you could get down into the water for those via a small warn path under the railing before the main lookout area ;) (I only knew this thanks to scanning other peoples images before we left)

Haha, I camped overnight in that carpark, too. It was pretty damn cold.

Got up at twilight and went walking to the lookout areas. Parts of the lookout were closed for repairs, unfortunately.

The sky in my morning shot resembles yours, minus the beautiful, glaring reflection on the water, and the sun. Mine also was presented in 617 format.

Ah, Marriners. I haven't been to that one. It does remind me of Beauchamp. And, yep, Hopetoun is magic. I took plenty of images of that. Again, posted here. :)

Cheers H, I intend to mate - still learning much as I go. Yep we really were lucky with that sunset. I made a pano from the following morning which I like, but there's no striking colour in the cloud at all.

Marriners was a easy 1.5 KM walk, but there isn't too many interesting angles to shoot it from - or I'm just not creative enough :D

I've really wanted to get a Fuji 617 for a while now, but the cost can't really justify how much I'd shoot with it. Maybe one day when I'm rich and not-famous.

They come up on fleabay every now and then. $4K-$5K. :(

Add to that a top quality drum scanner. And, a beefy computer that can handle the multi-gigabyte resultant PSD's, haha.

617 definitely tests your mettle as a photographer. There's really only specific subjects you can shoot with it. Or, a really tall model with killer pins that don't stop. ;)

Haha :D Yeah I got an epson v700.. but it's no drum scanner that's for sure. I'd like to try 617 but now I don't think it's something I'd go out and buy. Best I've seen is about $3.8 on ebay for the body and 90mm lens. still too much.

Very enjoyable to view, I think my favourites are the waterfall shots. I like the way your eyes are drawn to follow the path of the stream back to the waterfall.
