Someone hijacked my email account and may have sent some here a bogus email which links to a virus.

Please ignore and delete any email from me today as I have not sent it and its a link to a virus.

My apologies.

Greg Bradley.

Wasn't really a virus. A bit nastier. The page link redirected to an IP running a script trying to create a windows hook. Anybody without a firewall would have been caught out. I don't know what the script does exactly as I stopped it before it resumed.

Hi,

If you want an extra layer of protection specifically against bogus email, you could consider Iconix Email ID, a freeware tool:

http://www.iconix.com/index.php

Paypal is suggesting it to users aftar a recent spate of bogus Paypal email scams. However the Iconix website may be very slow, as it seems to be heavily loaded. Wonder why.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but I have a question following on from what Carl suggested.

I've never had a Mac, but they do look cool and I am up for a new pc some time soon :D If I buy a Mac and use it to run all my existing windows progs, do I still get the inherent "Mac" protection against viruses. If this is a dumb question, try to be polite ;)

Cheers

With that sort of attitude, I cant wait till you are posting that you have been infected with malware:rofl:

Mac's are not immune, they just arent a target.....yet. Ring Apple support tell them you have installed Mac Defender :lol: and see what they tell you to do......... nothing they have been told not to help you.

People think MS are bad, but at least they arent an Ostrich like Apple.

And the more people say that Macs are safe, means more marshmallows for the fire.

I have just literally finished reinstalling windows as I had been attacked by malicious software. I looked at a file that was supposedly sent by a friend (he hadnt sent it) and when I tried to view any of my favourite websites, including IIS, I was redirected to porn sites. SpyBot Malaware and AVG couldnt get rid of it.
The file in question disappeared the moment I clicked on it to open never to be seen again.

All those nasties are very hard to get rid of once you've got them because they jump from RAM to HD to master boot record, so there are specific tools and steps to get rid of them. That's why prevention is paramount. Doesn't matter what you use. Get a good commercial firewall and antivirus. Keep it simple. Avoid all the anti malware this or anti spam that, or pc cleaner and all that BS. Most of the time those tools are the problem.
