This was premiered on ABC on Saturday night, and is a new scifi series from the BBC, which is set in the year 2040. Seems 8 episodes were made, and unsure if any more are forthcoming.

I watched some of it, but will rewatch as fell asleep - no reflection on the quality, i was just buggered.

It was mentioned in the dreaded now locked thread in General Chat, so a few saw it.;)

Now watching on ABC iview : )

Damn. I happen to like these slower sci-fi dramas too Liz - SG Universe as a prime example. It seems that the viewing public and critics are after wham-bam.

Sci-Fi series I get interested in have an annoying habit of getting cancelled.

At least we'll always have Star Trek re-runs to fall back on - 5 series to cycle through.

Doh, that would be right, oh well, I know I will enjoy ?8 episodes.

I agree Liz - we have to take what we can! :)

Really enjoyed this episode, now having to deal with another cancellation is getting really annoying.

Damn..... you could be right.... some kind of serial vicious predestination paradox. But if I stop watching Sci-Fi series will they ever have existed? Or the more important question, do I watch too much Star Trek :)

Ill add my voice to the fan base. Enjoyed the first episode.

I agree with Liz and Chris - slower pace - greater appreciation of the characters and plot.

Cheers Petra d.

You mean four Tony ;) DSN ain't Star Trek...

Maybe I should watch it some day - as long as they get off the promenade.

ummmm somewhat liked that first ep ( of Outcasts) but I thought it was toooooo slow in some parts. SGU was also slow in some parts but had some OOMPH to it that kept me interested. Outcasts ( first ep for me) was very very dark and could not keep up with all the various plot lines.
Still it is SCI FI, and we need ( not want!) IT. ( Need something is to survive, Want is a desirable )

I enjoyed DS9 for it's long list of great characters. My favourites are Quark (loveable scoundrel), Wey-youn (charming villan), Kai Wynn (ambitious, despicable) and the mysterious Garak. Dozens of interesting characters played by convincing actors.

Can we also have a rousing cheer for Babylon 5... made as a 5 year show and ran for all 5 years.

All the good sci-fi just doesn't last long on mainstream TV

count how many shows in the last few years have or been canned after 1 season eg:

Serenity
Gravity
SGU
Outcasts

makes you wonder how come LOST lasted so long

I enjoyed the series though one did have to overlook the B-grade acting.

A lead actor with a theatrical background makes a big difference - would have helped immensely in Star Trek: Enterprise.

Better to have a stage actor who over-acts a little (eg. Sisko, DS9) than a so-so actor.

I caught up with Outcasts over the weekend and thought it was a great episode and looks like it has the potential to be a great show.

It's a pity to read that its already been canned.

Oh, I seem to have acquired a few epiosdes of 'Outcasts' so will settle back for the night. :D

Just rewatched that 1st episode and loved it!! naughty bad APOLLO. The series must have gone downhill from there for cancellation.

... and the 2nd episode, also v.good.

That would be typical...they'll probably replace it with some ridiculously stupid and banal reality series, or some "dance with..." or "idol" show. Seems the viewing public has an IQ of -100 and a mindless fascination for gutter trash.

Actually my IQ is in the top 1/2 percent and I suspect strongly that there are other viewers and IIS members with a higher IQ than mine.

I wasn't counting anyone here, just the general public...and yes, mine is:):)

I think the populace has been conditioned to think of Sci-Fi as having space ships, space battles, laser beams, aliens and the like (in every episode).

When you just get intelligent stories and good acting, they just dont get it:screwy:

They think it is not Sci-Fi when it looks too close to reality.

I put the Q to a UK Forum that I am on and prob 60% didnt like it at all!!

Others said it got worse after the 2nd episode, a couple of others loved it. Others said the last couole were very good, and the season ends with a 'cliffhanger' . That will leave us dangling for eternity now ..... unless it gets picked up again, because of hte huge popularity it WILL get in Aus. :D

They said it was a shame that it was shown on BBC2 instead of BBC1, they reckon it would have got a 2nd season on BBC1.

I am still loving it, and finished the 3rd episode.:thumbsup:

Yeah, all the good shows get canned.

Firefly, Arrested Development, Dollhouse (once you got past the first few episodes)...

I don't get why this show got canned.

It's one of the only shows I can stand, and, that was a good episode.

I don't have a TV so went to a friend's to watch it!

I turned it off when the guy said to Lily - "cure her or you're dead" - about as poor a line as you'd get from Home and Away

You should have waited Jennifer, it got quite interesting from there on.

One fellow looks like he's got a cult thing starting up, a few people are already onto him.

Quite intriguing.

same reason why the remake of 'Survivors' was canned.

Just watched another episode (4), ooooh, its getting (more) interesting!! Love it!!

Hey, does anyone think that President Tait is like dear Captain John Luc?? Have the same stance, head shape, eyes and gestures.

casstony
18-06-2011, 08:32 PM
He is a bit like Picard, both father-figures to their crew, though I think Tait would still maintain his calm demeanor ever under those four Cardassian lights, or was it five?

Outcasts just keeps getting better through its eight episodes - then it stops :mad2:. Sometimes I think life might be happier in the fat part of the bell curve.

Ric

Yep another great episode.

The only annoying thing is that I am really enjoying it while in the back of your mind you know that it won't continue on.

Yep, thought the same thing. Something of a Patrick Stewart

Yes, Ric, this seems to be what happens to ALL decent Sci-Fi series that are not full of whizz bang short term attention span content but have more thought content. Remember Earth2, went the same way.

Have taken a look Liz and you do seem to be a bit of an Alien amongst the crowd there. Few seemed to like it. For me, well, I'm still trying. I watch very little tv and this is one of the progs I do watch. One prob I have with it is that there appears no direction. Earth2 did have some focus, this is more akin to post apocolypic themes with survival being the main aim, with extra-terrestrial base being the excuse. But regardless of all, if they wish to cut the series they should at least have a final episode that does not leave critical points hanging, but instead, some optomistm for the future.

Doh, doh, doh!! Just watched the final episode of 'Outcasts' ... leaves you hanging on sooo many levels, a great episode though. So glad that irritating ?julian character is under lock and key.
This could have headed off in so tangents .... alas, series suspended.
Oh well, 7-8 hrs of sci fi enjoyment.
