Something very bright just out of the field of view David. What camera, scope/lens were you using?

That's your best bet...something shining into your optics causing internal reflections.

That would be my guess also. I once had a similar problem using a Mak180 with no light shield. The scope picked up a neighbor's light. It moved as you also indicated, due to the scope rotation relative the fixed light.

Yeah you've got some nasty reflections there. Perhaps a lens hood will help there. Or point in a direction where there isn't something shining into your lens. Have a look at the end of your lens. Is there shiny metal?
Blackening it with a permanent marker may get rid of the problem.
