Sacred Kingfisher

Hi All,

I was sitting out in the sun this morning reading and getting warm. When I heard a bird hit the wall of next doors house I went to look and saw some magpies attacking a Sacred Kingfisher picking it up by it's head well I saw the magpies off they don't attack us as we feed them and they can recognise us. And put my jumper over the kingfisher and brought it inside to examine it. Well he was sitting on Pam's hand not scared and no panic. So I took the chance to get some photo's close up not a usual opportunity well the last photo was taken and he flew off into a nearby tree so I think he is ok.:D

The maggies were probably after him as food. I've seen magpies attack the little Peaceful Doves trying to catch them for food. What a pity he's not as big as his cousin, the kookaburra. I've seen the tables turned in that case. Maggies attacking a kookaburra and the kookaburra beating up on the maggies:)

The best thing to do when birds are a bit shocked or possibly injured is to put them in a box witha soft cloth and a lid for about half an hour and then see if they are OK:question: if so away they go:thumbsup:
I have had the same experience with King fishers :)but no piccies:(

Absolutely beautiful! Plus well done for your good deed for the day.

In all these years, I have only ever seen one and in that instance I heard something
hit a glass door here, went out to investigate and found one on the balcony laying
motionless on its side. It struck me how beautiful it was and compared to a
Kookaburra, how small it was - but he looked dead. However, after laying motionless
for a minute or two, it became animated, shook itself and just like that, flew off again.
It would have been nice to look at it some more but I was relieved it was still alive.

So thanks for sharing the shots and that and your story have helped brighten the day!

Good on you Warren. Birds can be a little sensitive to shock - hope he makes it. Beautiful image.
