Dawn planet trails, 26 May 2011

Hi all,

Clear skies in Brisbane this morning, and I wanted a different take on the morning planets, so I got up at 4:15am and headed over to Graceville for some "planet trails". First time I've done this sort of image, and so I had to make an educated guess regarding the settings. I ended up doing 59 x 30 seconds at f/13 plus 1 x 10 sec at f/8 a few minutes later (all at 400 iso using the 15-85mm lens at 24mm), which were stacked using Startrails to produce this image.

Nice effect Stephen, Wondering if the latitude of these photographs was about 28deg +/- 2 deg?

Thanks Carl, Odille, Malcolm and Tony. As I said, I'm new at this start trails stuff, so I was quite pleased with how these came out.

Malcolm, these were taken from Brisbane, latitude 27.5 deg.

Cool a lot closer than I expected, just means that you camera was nice and flat on the horizon.
I have been doing some experiments (very simple) measuring the angle of moon and planets aligning as the earth rotate. Planets are very close to our rotation so the protractor on the monitor was a rough 28 degrees.

I did a moon shot recent over 2 days that showed 2 - 5 degree offset to my latitude. Just fiddling with simple measuring thanks.
