Just a note to say that Southern Stars have released the Plus and Pro versions of their new V3 SkySafari app for iDevices. They are having a special for the first month so now would be a good time to update to V3 if you are so inclined.
I'm not affiliated with this group, but after using their earlier versions I'd definitely recommend this app.

At $37 for the pro3 version - boy they may not sell too many apps if that's 1/2 price now

Got version 2 with the extension pack. It's a great little tool. I had a look at the change log for v3. A lot more content and improved graphics but I can't see any major improvement for what I'm doing with it anyway. Maybe people who drive scopes with it may have improved functionality too.

The plus version is 1/4 the price and should be sufficient for most. It's the equivalent of the old version 2 with expansion pack.
I've had version 2 for some time and it's great. The new features of version 3 are nice but it's a shame it's not a free or discounted upgrade.

$36 is the half price??? Wtf? Wow.
Yeh... I feel shafted. Not long ago I bought v2 and the expansion pack ~$23. This is now equivalent to the $8 app?
Sorry but no deal.

Yep - thanks Simon - an absolute must! Over half a gig of database right down to 18th mag. Going for v3Pro now before the price hike.
StarMapPro HD - 149Mb
SkySafari 3 Pro - 566Mb
Jack - don't feel ripped off. They have to release big updates from time to time and you've been caught on the cusp.
EDIT: Hmmm.. after downloading v3 Pro on to my iMac with the plan to then install it on to my original iPad it's come up with a message "Warning - Incompatible with this iPad". When I looked on the device the application was certainly there though and it runs just fine. Very nice! I've emailed Tim at Southern Stars for his advice. It should load without issue as there is no warning on iTunes that it isn't compatible with the original device - that'd be really silly. I'll post his response.

I agree Allan - it's beautiful. Runs like a train on both my original 64/3G iPad and iPhone 4. I'd still like to see a more graphical GUI with regard to the "what's up tonight" list, ala StarMap Pro. In one glance you can see where targets are in relation to the meridian. Can't wait to give it some of my time.

Wow - I have a response from Southern Stars already - one hour later. This is one of the main reasons I am a real fan of these fellas.

I reported to them an error for ngc3195. Within 5 min they said there was an error and would correct it. Great attitude and response.

I like v2 as well, but I'm not sure I should spring for v3 Pro, given that I'll have to pay again (at least) as much in a year's time if I want to stay with the programme. I might actually skip v3 altogether and wait for v4.
Cheers
Steffen.

They were kind enough to do a special deal for members of the southern_stars Yahoo group who submitted a review of V3.
Cheers,
Rick.

There is now an upgrade price to 3 plus from V2. 3 pro has zillions of stars and DSOs but I don't think one lifetime is enough to browse all that. I can settle for a couple of 1000s. :)
