Is it Plossl with o as in pot
or ur as in hurt
or oa as in boat
Or something uniquely Austrian?

I'd say you're on the money with the "ur" as in "hurt".

I'm not sure of the origin of the word - but in German you pronounce an 'O' with an umlaut (the two little dots above the o) as 'ur' as in hurt, but not as long

But this is a great question. Given that IIS doesn't talk to me, I form the sounds of lots of astronomical terms in my mind. I bet I have many "wrong" - star names, constellations, equipment etc. :D

There are some guides:-

http://www.astronomyclub.org/learn/Say_What.htm

http://www.wsanford.com/~wsanford/exo/pronunciation_guide.html (http://www.wsanford.com/%7Ewsanford/exo/pronunciation_guide.html)

But, will we all agree? Wikipedia says:-

"The English pronunciation of the name Pleiades depends on the speaker.

US: /ˈpliː.ədiːz/ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IPA_for_English) plee-ə-deez (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Pronunciation_respelling_ key) or sometimes /ˈpleɪ.ədiːz/ play-ə-deez (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Pronunciation_respelling_ key)
UK: /ˈplaɪ.ədiːz/ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IPA_for_English) ply-ə-deez (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Pronunciation_respelling_ key)
Canadian English: /ˈpleɪ.ədiːz/ play-ə-deez (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Pronunciation_respelling_ key)"

You raise a very valid point. Just how do we define ourselves as a group. Dialects and accent are crucial in defining social groups. But our social group is web based so our rules are somewhat different.

My wife is currently teaching a course at a doctoral level about how the web has affected people movements and it is a most interesting subject.

Considering that the general public wouldn't have have a clue what we are talking about anyway I suppose it doesn't matter how we pronounce Astro names and terms.

I've heard some funny ones when we get together at Camp

Alder-Bran, Al-Dabberin, Alder-Barren, Orl-de-bran, and that's just for 1 star!

:P

then there is An-tar-eez, Ant-air-eez, ant-ar-ess, Ant-air-ess etc

No matter who writes a list, that list will be in that countries accent.
I'd love to see an Australian Pronunciation list ;)

that reminds me of years ago when working a stint in construction in the US.

whenever material orders were made in the company i was with, the bean counters would get miffed (and we'd get a laugh) as they could never cut the cost of the electricians orders because none of them knew what the things were that they were ordering.

anyway, i always thought plossl was like collosal .

Now, how would you like that pronounced?

:P

Just call it 'Seven Sisters'. Anyone can say that

I guess a lot of pronunciation becomes local to the area you grew up, the country you live in, where you are when you say it....

I pronounce Uranus as you-rarn-oos, mainly because it has less quips, than the more usual pronunciation.

But I always say that if you are in Australia, the capital of France is Paris, but the "propper pronunciation" is really par-ree with a rolling of the r's in the middle...however, now I am older, I can't roll my r's like I used to :)
