went for a quick drive to injunaup beach again catch the approaching storm and was very rough and got very wet by the large wave but was worth it i think.

thanks H. i only learn by posting my shots on forums like this with help from you and others so thanks to yous guys. on two of my shots i used a little bit of smart blur to help with the gainy noise in the clouds is there any thing else i can try ? cheers :)

Do you use a ND filter to get the long exposure or was it just getting dark ?

Thats what I've been using Shane but some times is not enough particularly when i want to use a wide ish aperture so I've ordered a variable ( 2 to 8 stops ) ND made by Light Craft .
Should do the trick.

How thick is the ring on the variable system? If it's any more than 1cm, then, you will see the ring of the filter on your wide-angled lenses.

I have a variable system with a built-in warming polariser and it's about 1.5 cm thick. On my 17-40mm lens, I have to zoom to 24mm before the ring of the filter is not visible in my images. I think I paid extra and bought the thin version, too.

Unfortunately, there's no way around it, other than using hand-held filters or a filter holding system with large format neutral density filters.

This is an expensive hobby. :(

Good photographic neutral density filters are just that -- neutral. That is to say, they don't leave tints or casts in your images.

I don't think car tinting film is built to the same exacting tolerances of the best filter makers.

The light Craft NDs are made a bit larger so the 77mm one has 82mm glass . So it should be ok .
