Bird - astra image?

Hey Anthony.

I've donwloaded Astra Image and Gimp to try this split/deconvolution/recombine that you do.

I tried it with a Jupiter image from the 19th January, that I re-processed in registax this morning. This one turned out better than my previous processing, thanks to creating reference frame and a bit better technique.

Here's my original (after processing):

Now, I loaded it into Astra Image, did a "split" which created the RED/BLUE/GREEN images, and then on each image I did a "Lucy Richardson Deconvolution".

I then did a "Recombine", choosing the red/green/blue, and this is the result.

Obviously, it doesn't look that great with some processing artifacts around the edge.

I used the default parameters for the LR deconv..

What am I doing wrong?
Can you explain the exact steps (and parameters) you use when processing a planetary image, such as you did to my recent jupiter on CN the other day?

I also just tried it with my Saturn image from 31/01/2005..

It came out a bit better (I think), without the artifacts around the edge.. I applied pretty much the exact same technique as per the Jupiter above.

Is it any better, or have I been looking at it too long?

Well, try changing the LR parameters away from their default. The better your original images (i.e. the sharper they are) the smaller the LR radius should be.

So, the default radius is 2, but did you try 1.7 or 1.5 to compare?

Also try changing the number of turns, so try 5 instead of 10.

It's all trial and error, cause the magic values for these parameters depend on the quality of your original.

btw the hard ring-like edge to your reprocessed shot shows that the LR has done too much and added artifacts.

Thanks Anthony i'll give that a go.

At what stage in the processing do you use astraimage? After stacking? Do you do wavelets in registax first and then deconvol, or do you deconvol and then do wavelets?

I use astra image after I finish with Registax wavelets and save the image.

My order is:

registax
astra image
gimp (if needed, to add text etc).
