Hey guys, i bought a canon 550d the other day after being inspired by some encouraging results with a point and shoot on the 11th. I have been interested in photography but only have a fairly rudimentary knowledge of cameras based on working at a hock shop ;)
So i guess im keen for some critisisms, and can anyone help me with a few questions?
What are the lines coming down ( from venus especially) in the lighthouse shot? len artifacts? Can they be reduced?
Also i seem to notice star trails at even 6 second exposures, or am i just wobbly?
TL;DR more conjunction shots :P

Very nice start when you said about star trails at 6 sec that is not possible are you using a tripod I can get almost 30 sec with nice round stars. I like the effect of the venus I couldn't see the line coming down in the light house shot and the light coming down off the downlight on the light house is I think from the exposure time and I think looks good. If you have taken these with out a tripod you have done well if you are using a tripod are you using the shutter causing the shake if so buy a remote shutter release or use the timer function to give the camera time to stop shaking after pressing the shutter.
And welcome to IIS

You'll get trails after 30 seconds, Warren, but if you're using a very short focal length then it won't be AS noticeable.
Anything over 25mm and you'll see slight trailing, sometimes even after 15-20 seconds.
Great shots!!
Your pics have turned out pretty well, and esp like the lighthouse (?) one.
It can take a lot of practice to get the focus right, still drives me bananas sometimes, and a lot of people actually put a mark on the lens where focus is right. Even with Liveview it is still difficult.
Looks a great spot to take images. :)
Are you on Facebook? I believe your lighthouse image has made it there on the IceInSpace page - well done. :)

thanks guys for you comments, :D i wouldve even been happy with some links from your bookmarks,
so for the lighthouse shot i had it on 2 sec timer which supposedly reduces mechanical shake by pre opening the shutter, and a tiny 30 cm tripod ontop of the roof of the car. it was pretty windy, and the car is on suspension so yeah camera shake is likely. before this excursion i was like
" huh who the EFF pays hundreds for a tripod ill have the $15 job thanks"
lol now i know...
thanks for the welcome supernova, ive been lurking since 2008! :eyepop:
