I laughed at first....But really it's quite sad isn't it....how many people lack basic knowledge.

thanks to ASA for the link on FB.

Why the hell didn't the "Expert" Just say it was Venus and be done with it and Koshi and Mel were acting like it was a fairdinkum UFO it just affirms to me why I stopped watching Sunrise in the morning :P:rofl:

All I'm getting is the message:

"Sorry this video is no longer available. It has been abducted by aliens." Yes, I made up the last bit.

It's all about a few extra points in the ratings game.

Pretty sad really.

Always remember, half the people you see are below average intelligence.

I'm finding myself less and less tolerant of peoples simple minded views. The conspiracy theorists, the ufologists, the astrologers, the moon hoaxers, the doomsday cultists and the holocaust deniers.
I don't know if I'm a magnet for such people, but I'm at the stage where I'm scared to strike up a conversation with people in case they start pushing their whacko points of view onto me.

Why didn't the expert ask which direction they were looking at and what time?
That would eliminate or confirm Venus.....

Even if the Expert:question: would have asked the obvious question those clowns probably wouldn't know the East from the West:sadeyes:
The camera was being put in and out of focus and waving it about like a flag in the wind:screwy:

Too stoned too pissed to remember which way was what!!!!!!!!!

Interesting that Venus is supposedly intelligently controlled, yet it's pretty obvious that the video camera was not.....

What a load of media ignorant clap trap.....

I find myself asking them if they're into astronomy pretty early & if they say no, well I'm outa there:lol: "Sorry, but I can only converse with intelligent folk, bye!";)

jjjnettie
06-05-2011, 08:52 PM
And don't you just cringe when after telling them you're into astronomy, they come back with their star sign.
Or they ask if you've seen any UFO's.
Or they tell you that the moon landing was a hoax.
Or they ask if you use your telescope to look into peoples windows.
:mad2: :screwy:  :screwy: :mad2:

Yes, I've been asked all those Q's more than once  The worst thing of all (for me) is aquaintances asking me if I'm "STILL INTO ASTROLOGY, ARE YOU JOHN!?" :mad2::shrug:

Arrrgh.
I have friends who are seriously into astrology and they keep telling me how it's all very scientific. They have to use computer programs to write up their charts.
yeah right
And every thing you see on TV is true too.

 I hear you JJJ. If we are at a party or something and my wife tells people that I'm into astronomy most of the time they come out with all their nutjob views and then I have to try and escape from them and they're not interested in hearing the logical side of it.

I love this thread, it's hilarious!:lol::lol::lol:

It seems that they purposely didn't ask an ASTRONOMER, as opposed to a "UFO expert" what it may have been.

The media always knows what it's doing.;)

It's called ratings.

Saw the video, at a particular time of the video noticed the object move proportional to the moving of the video camera. I would say that is a reflection on the lens possibly Venus.

Nice comments

Just looking at the video again, at the 2:33 minute mark the camera pans back and it looks like they are definitely looking into the east dawn sky.
Venus.

I try to avoid telling people one of my hobbies is astronomy, its just too painful
having to put up with these questions-I no longer do field nights any more either-once again-just all the painful questions.

A lot steam from such T,V reports in the O.P.why do these T.V stations put such rubbish on air,its because the average public see this type of reports or similar, that they soon have views on space and astronomy matters that they truly believe.

Its a great shame this T.V network could not give the same time and coverage to 'Bird Strike',or a small interview at 'Quarks' place. There are so many gifted and talented people on this forum that have made many types of observations, images etc that are quite a scientific significance, but no coverage.

The general public would'nt have a clue how much time and effort it takes to get something right.

'Sunrise', 'The Morning Show' etc, are just electronic versions of 'Who Weekly'. Sadly society these days, or it seems the great majority of it, are just interested in hearing every little detail of every little celebrity's life, and the moron's who make up our great unwashed want their bit of fame and media spotlight too.

Cheers,
Jason.

.

Many people ask questions at social gatherings so that they can talk about themselves. Next time someone asks about your interests, ask them if they own a telescope...:confused2:

If we could just introduce them to Stellarium...

Illusion of movement obviously caused by cloud movement. I'm not sure, but I think I saw a gibbous phase when the camera finally focused while zoomed... I'll have to download the clip and go frame by frame.

OIC!

You just have to watch the movie idiocracy to see why and where we are heading. The great unwashed are taking over, the comment about half the population is below average intelligence is fine but what if the average is falling? :help:

One of the many reasons i unplugged my TV at the wall 8 months ago.

Love movies and i buy some select TV series (NO brainwashing ads...)

TV just rots your brain. Opiate for the masses.

People's live would be significantly different if they could do without TV, they might even develop intelligent hobbies (yes even outside of astronomy).

I've done the same Frank.
When I moved into this house, it was a conscious decision not to connect the tv.
Like you I'll buy select tv series to watch.

I also don't watch free to air TV, doco's on Foxtel yes, but no standard TV programs designed for fringe dwellers.

Hi All,

I feel exactly the same way jjj. Most days I get motivated and will fight them, but there are some other days I just sigh, shake my head and walk off -- I just don't have the energy to fight them all the time. To adapt a quote by someone who was very wise -- "The most abundant element in the Universe isn't 'Hydrogen', it's 'stupid' ".

The lack of capacity in the general population to apply a bit of logic, to seek independent empirical evidence and to think critically astounds me sometimes -- in fact most times. Given this particular story it must have been a very slow news day. So, why not ask an astronomer what it was? Someone, like, familiar with the night sky? Of course that would "ruin" the story.

The "UFO" phenomenon is just one manifestation of it -- albeit a particularly high profile one.

Best,

Les D

I did this about 7 yrs ago, only I went one step further & uprooted it & threw it on the front lawn. We have a TV where I am these days, but I only use it to watch the odd movie with.
