My best solar full disk mosaic

I think I can finally say I have the work flow and capture settings worked out for solar mosaics. With some minor tweeks here and there I should be making much better images yet. Pretty happy with this image overall.

I suggest you take a look around the limb for some nice prominences. There is also some really nice detail on the disk too.

When I <clicked> the http link I though that I had been directed to a NASA solar observatory website.:)

I have a 1920x1200 display and your image looks visually stunning. Your hard work has paid off in producing such an excellent image. I guess that I’m going to have to read a book about our Sun now, so that I can gain an appreciation of all the features and technical details you have so nicely served up.

Rolf, in the past I was isolating the space and prominences with the magic tool colouring it and then inverting the image. This invariably left a dark or light line after all the colouring was applied. Not an overly natural look. This however is just colouring the whole image at once using colour balance but being mindful of only using the midtones and background tones only. It completely removes the line problem altogether. I had in the past also done an imaging run for the prominences and then one for the disk detail. Blending this also creates the dark line issue. So now I use settings which capture the prominences faintly and the disk detail in the single capture and then I enhance each lot of features via masking. This image took 3 hours to process from the start to finish. Not too long for those interested in getting better solar shots.


Dennis you are too kind, but that is my goal to continually perfect my imaging and photography. Wish I could do this for a living sometimes. There are some great books around for solar theory and understanding of the features you are imaging or observing. Solar physics is really interesting.
