Wow, I saw the headlines on a news website earlier but I didn't click and read the full article because I assumed it was just another tornado in the USA.

I first saw this on the American news channel FoxNews, and they said "Tornadoes are now heading South".
Which to most Americans watching would mean somewhere near Florida.
In the report I didn't even here the name 'New Zealand' once.
However they did say 'Auckland' about 3 times.
The story was very short (about 15 seconds) probably because it was such a small Tornado in comparison to theirs.
Has NZ ever had a tornado before?
What's going on?:screwy:

Morning All,
Just to set a few 'facts' straight.
Only one dead, flung against a concrete wall. 15 in Hospital, 2 serious but expected to survive.
It is extremely unusual for NZ to have a tornado although not unknown. The fact that it was estimated as a F2 (200 km winds) is very unusual. I've seen smaller ones and waterspouts out in the gulf are seen now and then in spring and summer but they are certainly not a regular occurence.
My wife was about 1 km away at work and came home shaking afterwards. She could see the debris flying about from office window.
Whatever is going on the weather has certainly been unusual over the last year or so. More extremes than previous (IMHO) so who knows what's next ?
How scary is that?
Not something I'd like to be caught in.

Always sad to see that sort of destruction.
It a strange Irony I am booked to take my partner to NZ in December for her first O/S. My Thinking was, NZ is so safe.
We fly into Auckland and then on to Christchurch ... Opps !
That said, neither of us are really concerned, I have family in the south island.

Tornadoes can form anywhere there are thunderstorms.
From the NZ Herald report (in full here (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10723267)):
"Albany's second killer blow
Yesterday's tornado is the second fatal twister to hit Auckland's North Shore area in 20 years.
In May 1991, a tornado hit Albany, lifting roofing iron from homes and destroying a small church on the south-western side of the suburb. One man died when debris spread by the tornado hit him while he was driving a bulldozer.
Damaging tornadoes seem to hit Auckland every two or three years and other previous incidents have included damage to buildings and power lines.
One of New Zealand's worst tornadoes was at Frankton, Hamilton, in August 1948, when three people were killed.
Seven people were badly injured and damage to property was heavy.
Buildings were lifted from their piles, chimneys were snapped off, houses lost their roofs, trees uprooted and power and telephone lines were left hanging in the streets.
Reports at the time said the air was filled with flying corrugated iron, branches of trees, timber and other debris.
Another three people died in a tornado near Waitara, Taranaki, in 2004."

Still a heck of a lot safer than the US with 178 Tornadoes in one day and over 300 fatalities not to mention damage. This one was only an estimated F2. Just gives yo some idea of what an F5 or higher can do.
