I have finally got organised to order my 8" DOB. My question is;

I have two eye pieces from my previous scope a 25mm Plossl & 12.5mm Plossl (also a moon filter).

I am buying the scope from the same retailers as my original one (Andrews) and the standard eye pieces are GSO 6mm, 9mm and 25mm 1.25" Plossl eyepieces - and a bonus SP series 2" eyepiece, too!

What EP should I ask for instead of another 25mm EP? And is there much difference between the 9mm and 12.5mm?

Oh and what is the "bonus SP series 2" eyepiece, too!"?

Thanks

Richard

6mm Plossel, as an eyeglass wearer, BLURGH.

But that's just me.

SP 2" i would assume would be a 26mm or 32mm. Perfectly suitable for sweeping the sky.

Personally I'd try getting a discount on a collimator or a telrad/red dot finder. You pretty much have every eyepiece over the range.

It's worth using the provided EPs to get a sense of which mags you prefer.
You can sort of extrapolate wider FoVs from there.
I've liked the following for an 8" dob/newt:
35 Panoptic
32 Agena Astro/UO SWA
30 Takahashi (not a widefield but superb contrast and faultless colour)
27 Panoptics
24 Panoptics
24 Takahashi (see above :) )
20 Nagler

For some reason, I have never warmed to the longer Naglers in dobs. I don't know why - maybe I've never tried them with a coma corrector, but they always seem to have too much curvature and coma for me.
To my eye, the Panoptics have a noticably flatter field with sharper stars.
YMMV,
Peter

A 15 or 17 wideview is where I'd go, or a 20. just that bit more mag but still with good coverage and if you have a 2 x barlow you get some excellent options.
