well sucking the juices out!,These small green fly's are common in S.E QLD,and are a lovely green. But I was lucky to get this capture of one having a meal.
I could not see it had lunch at first, but after reviewing a few images on the display,I noticed something-I really had zoom the image up to see what was going on.These green fly's are approx 10 mm long.so to then be able to have a view of what its eating,I thought was quite unreal-the macro lens is certainly not the best quality-but still manages an image like this.
Hope this is of interest-thanks for looking-Chris

I have seen these all over Canberra as well. Is it a Doli fly or a fruit fly? Very nice shot.

Nice shot Chris. Here's a link to the CSIRO fly anatomical atlas (http://www.ces.csiro.au/biology/fly/fly.html#). This one seems to fit into the class Lower Diptera? Is it a true fly?
Will try to narrow it down - Long legged fly (http://www.ozanimals.com/Insect/Long-Legged-Fly/Austrosciapus/connexus.html)

Yes, it's a "doli" (Dolichopodidae), common name "long legged fly". They are insectivores, quite common, and quite hard to capture with flash as they preflash with ETTL flash startles them and they're so fast to take off, by the time the shutter opens they're out of frame. Usually use manual flash to capture them, no preflash. Natural light shots should be fine.
