Entomological macros

Some more fun over the weekend.

My favourite is the antics of the very small jumping spider. He appeared in the FOV springing upon the hover fly (which got away) soon after this shot was taken - opportunist - bold as brass - very cheeky disposition.

The other two actually managed reasonable focus after dozens of hand held shots.

The Orb spider coexisted with two other species that were
(safely) making use of its web. It was too windy to get a good shot - very small spiders.

Nice shots Rowland. :thumbsup: Can you get hold of a tripod, that would make the process a bit easier. The two other species of spider would likely be males of the Golden Orb. They are much much smaller and quite variable in colouration at times.

Looks like he is deciding whether or not to go for that hoverfly.

Thanks all. A tripod is the answer, particularly for the spiders, but a monopod might be the answer for the more mobile insects - if only they would sit still.

Nice work mate. Hate to correct you, but that's not a jumping spider. It's a lynx spider. The spikey hairy legs and eyes are a give away. Jumping spiders have those big 4 eyes on front in the oOOo config.

Please excuse the pedantic correction, but... Etymology is the study of the history of words. Entomology is the scientific study of insects. Similar words but very different meanings :)
