Hi All,

Imaged Saturn last night in good seeing, have very good coverage of the head of the storm which now contains a very bright spot, this seems more distinct and concentrated than it was last time I imaged this region.

Have 4 RGB & 4 807nm IR data sets captured at approx 35 min intervals, the IR data is up there with my best for this apparition.

The RGB's also show the Encke division quite well and Dione & Tethys are in all RGB's. This would be my best rendition of the Encke division for this apparition, it is best defined in the rings on the morning ansae.

Have also attached animations of both RGB & IR data sets, Encke can be seen right through the RGB animation, a testament to how consistent the conditions were for this session.

Thanks for looking.

Regards
Trevor

Hi Trevor

Great images and animations!

The storm head still continues to put on a great show!

Wonderful capture of Saturn, Trevor. The animation is one for me to remember, so smooth and even, showing the storm well. Thanks for the views. All the best.

I love good seeing and Encke is there in every image, I think Encke will certainly be better shown next year. Encke gets better contrast with Regx6 with align points at ring ends. Tried Regx6 linked wavelets with denoise and sharpening which is an interesting feature giving interesting results. Jupiter with Regx6 will be interesting.

John.

Thanks Lester very much for your most generous comment.

Thanks very much Matt.

Thanks John, have run a very good data set of Jupiter from last November through R6 and attached it to this reply, used 240 alignment points. This data has a wealth of hi-res detail for the alignment points to anchor on and the result is extremely good. Good data needs very little wavelet sharpening, definitely not linked wavelets. This image has had no curves or levels adjustments nor have I dealt with the limb in CS4, I think an interesting result non the less.

Very nice Saturn/s Trevor, the animations are top class, and Jupiter is a ripper. My memory is going, but it's as good a shot or better than I can recall you posting before (although the smaller scale helps )

Trevor

Your shot of Jupiter has to be one of the best ground based images, period.

Considering you did almost no processing, I suspect you were actually on the ISS... ;)

Great shot
OIC!

Thanks very much Clayton, glad you liked the animations, a lot of work went into them, this Jup is at the native scale of my imaging setup. From time to time I have resampled data but always up, not sure, but I may have include a 150% resample back when I originally posted this image. I never reduce an image below my native image scale.

Thanks very much OIC but I think the best ground based image of Jupiter ever taken was by Anthony Wesley on his trip to Exmouth last year and then we have the mind blowing images that Damian Peach produces on his annual pilgrimage to Barbados. I think this image is pretty good but just not in the same class of Anthony or Damian.

Thanks very much Houghy.

Sorry Trevor, :) What I meant was a smaller scale than your normal posts, not smaller than native. But when I look back I think I was wrong about this, and it's just a damn good image

Exceptional Saturn images Trevor. The R6 Jupiter is stunning as well - looks to be an excellent new tool for images with lots of structure. Regards Ray

Nice images Trev. Looks like you got the seing again. Seeing has been less than average here for the last couple of weeks, just going to have to wait. I have been watching your zone though. You have been getting the occasional high over your spot and this is most likely the reason for the good seeing. Couple of nights you also has wind directions the same top and bottom.

Not yet convinced about automatic registax6. It takes away a lot of features I rather like and found useful. Time will tell though.

Thanks very much Ray.

Thanks Paul, looking at all of the charts next Friday night, at this stage, looks promising.
The ability of R6 to successfully map an image using hundred of alignment points is a real advance on R5 and to be able to achieve it so fast, due to being able to take full advantage of the multi core architecture of modern computers is a real boon. Not sure about this new linked wavelets process, with the very good Jup data set that I ran through R6 I did not link the wavelets and went with very similar settings to those which I use in R5. This is very early days for R6 and I am sure with experience all of us will sort through the pro's & con's of it.

From memory your fav planet.
Very nice images :D
