I went outside to look hopefully at the sky last night and I ran back inside and excitedly exclaimed to my wife that I could see TWO STARS and you know what she said, she said don't be so lazy get your scope out you will regret it if you don't.:rofl::rolleyes:

You can often see two stars - Canopus and Sirius. They are bright enough to sometimes shine through the clouds.

You know its been cloudy for too long when:



you see constellations in the cloud patterns.
you see nebulae in the cloiud patterns (and, of course, being an astroholic you'll refer to them by their NGC numbers).
you estimate the level of cloudiness by the magnitude of the brightest star that can't shine through them.
you sometimes just sit in the observatory and... and have a little cry:(...

You Know it has been cloudy to long when at the first sign of a break in the clouds you rush out and set up a 16' scope only for the clouds to come over again and you don't even get the chance to even look through the eyepiece before having to put it away again:mad2:

You guys are so funny!

I just start using the Starry Nights software- it feels like I've achieved things, and I see stars lots and lots of stars. :P And then I zoom in and voila, there are the star clusters in my pretend eye piece.

You know it's been cloudy too long when your wife suggests you play squash at night because she's sick of you moping around the house forlornly going outside every 10 minutes to check the conditions. And to make matters worse I just know the clouds have cleared while I'm on the court only to reappear as soon as I walk out to the car to go home!

I have a friend who is in the process of buying a number of huge pumps - massive things - that he intends to lease to mining companies in central Qld - it seems their long-range forecasters are telling them to expect major flood events in the coming winter. You know when you get to 'know', and you can 'name' all different cloud types, just like you get to know constellations.
For example you go outside to set up and you say to yourself.
Mmm...there's a little too much 'altocumulus' out tonight, no maybe that's a bit high....it must be 'stratocumulus'.
And later in the night it develops into 'cumulonimbus'.
Oh bugger, what's on TV!!!!!
