I like this. It was sent to me in an email
The Washington Post - Everything Old is New Again !
Hot off the presses...
The Washington Post
The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consulafft, at Bergen, Norway. Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone.
Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes.
Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm. Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.
Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds.
Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and make most coastal cities uninhabitable.
Oops! Never mind. This report was from November 2, 1922, as reported by the Associated Press and published in the Washington Post - 88 years ago

Global warming was of course hypothesised in the late 19th century after the radiative forcing properties of CO2 and the fact that atmospheric CO2 concentrations are increasing was recognised. On that theme Isaac Asimov wrote an essay in 1959 entitled 'No More Ice Ages?'. However in 1922 it was impossible to say that AGW was occurring - even if they had had the supercomputers required to run Global Circulation Models (GCMs).
When numerous iterations of many different GCM are given the conditions in 1900 and told about changes in solar output, volcanism etc and run for 100 years, up until 1950 there is no statistical difference between iterations which account for increasing CO2, those that don't and the actual climate record. After 1950, however, instances of the GCMs that don't allow for increasing CO2 concentrations show a downward trend while those that do allow for the increase and the actual climate record both show an upward trend. Having this situation carefully explained to me (with supporting data presented) is what tipped me from believing AGW is theoretically possible but as yet unproven to believing that it has been observed.
We are indeed fortunate that we now have much more reliable, robust, and spatially and temporally complete data than a few fishermens' stories.

Are you going to the SPSP?

IceInSpace needs 500 more global warming threads.
We all know it isn't a contentious topic and it brings everyone closer together.

Ask the insurance companies what they think on this subject.
The only vested interest they care about is their own and their god is the almighty dollar.

Sorry H
I could not quickly find the last thread on this subject to stir the pudding in. Besides its a great controversial subject to sling mud in. Every one knows the ice age has been retreating for 10000 years and most of the water that was taken from the seas has already been returned. But there is still some left on Greenland, Russia(siberia) Canada and Antarctica. So we can surmise as to what it can do if by some chance it all melts.

I don't have any Naglers ..Hmmm? I do have some nice 6.5kg Tak counterweights though and let's see... we will set the distance between us at say 10m? :D ;)
Mike
ps I will give Barry a hug for his birthday instead :D

LOL Bring back those clear skies with some good seeing. That'll take their mind off of it.
Big Love to everyone on the forum. :D

I'll let you substitute any premium imaging gear. Aren't I nice!
Coming from you the hug may be worse than a Nagler in the side of the head.

No Thanks
Lets have Naglers at 30 paces. I will just use my keepers gloves to catch any thrown at me.

haha when it's cloudy, I prefer the odd slab or two.....
you can imagine my consumption of the happy juice reaches B-double proportions with my skies :help:
on a related note, I wonder if "global warming" is responsible for this seemingly cumulative perma-crappening of our skies

Well, if the oceans and air get warmer there will be more evaporation. And what goes up ...... :D
................. must come down :lol::lol:

We all know there is NOT global warming, do we?
Thanks Barry

Well...not really.
Mercury.... 4x more solar flux than Venus. Temperature... about 530K
Venus. 25% the solar flux of Mercury, but with a really dense CO2-enriched atmosphere. Temperature? about 730K!
Earth? TBA
There is a web write-up on the basic Physics here.

Why does everyone love comparing to Venus, with an atmosphere 93x more dense than ours.
You may as well compare to Mars then as well, with an atmosphere made up of 95% CO2 but an atmosphere 150x less dense than ours.
Mercury has next to nothing in the way of an atmosphere. Its atmosphere having been boiled away due to proximity to the sun.

I don't think everyone does, but if they do.....
...... it's likely to make the point: runaway geeenhouse can get very nasty by making a benign planetary atmosphere both hot and dense.

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:
I was referring to raising the temperature by 1-2K.
