Hi all.

Here's an image of Jupiter from the 23rd January, that I only got around to processing today.

It shows the GRS, plus Io coming up to transit, but daylight beat me before I could get the shadow of Io.

Processing was separated into RGB using netpbm tools, and the planet and Io were stacked separately and recombined via photoshop.

Comments welcome.

apart from Io being a bit smudgy its a brilliant pic mike :)
how many frames went into making that?

Smudgey hey?! I'll give you smudgey :P

Thanks Dave, it was 350 frames stacked in red, green and blue.

350 each?

ok, this might sound a little leftfield, or posible strange but have you considered stacking all kyour barlows on a really good night and targeting Io by it's self?
is that too weird?
it'd be good to see if you can get a nice smooth little globe out of it :)

Nice work as usual Mike.

beautiful Mike:) , I want to see if I can get that sort of colouration, nicely done.

i've seen some imaging of ganymede that showed detail, so I guess io is theoretically possible :confuse3:

Another great result.

Some good detail there, white spots etc. Little on the soft side though for my taste. The colour seems a little washed out also. The processing is interesting though. I did as for some help with this on the previous image you did, but I guess you want to keep that a secret.

well done ice,

a real 3d feel!

90seconds???

have you tried registax aligned on io???

i tried with mine from the 25th, but ppmcentre at 400x400 lost the moon, so i will have to give it another rip

Lovely shot! Nice 3D look.

DP, yep 90 seconds @ 5fps, giving me approx 450 frames in each channel (after splitting them), and I stacked about 350 of each channel before recombining in AstraImage.

I wanted to do 10fps to give me more frames, but I'm hopeful that if the seeing is good, the detail @ 5fps will be better, and even if only a handful of frames are stacked it will hopefully give a better result. If that new firmware turns out to compress better, then maybe 10fps will be the way to go.

This shot is a composite, with the first run aligned on the planet (separate rgb), and the second run aligned on Io (one shot colour). I'm going to try aligning on Io in separate RGB to see if it reduces the smudgey look.

I lost the moon as well using ppmcentre, but I ended up using -width=640 -height=480 -cutx=600 to keep the moon in frame.

Paul, I usually process harder but I've taken to liking a more natural, softer looking processing so that I'm not introducing artifacts by oversharpening.

hmm, yeh right.. I've already explained the step by step procedure on the forum, and to a few people in person at Lostock. I'm sure if you asked a specific question about it there'd be a few that can answer it. Anyway when you get your DMK you won't need to worry about that step as you'll already be capturing in separate RGB.

Robert/David, I'm sure we'll see quite a few images this apparition with detail on Io and/or ganymede. With the advances in camera technology and the huge focal length that the experts are imaging at these days, it's almost a given that we'll see something spectacular this year.

Thanks for your comments.

rumples, dont forget aviraw will split your avi into the three colours avis, you can then process from there
