And here it is, in all it's sub 200kb glory.
My Moon Cactus flowered tonight!

The animation consists of 42 images, taken 5 minutes apart.

You can watch a slightly higher resolution video here.

That looks so cool. Can I use it in one of my botany classes?

Hi,

Terrific. I can't get over how it "knows" of the full moon.

I wonder if it is a succession of lunar phases causing changes, which build up. My best guess.

Cheers

I grew Gourds in my previous hobby. Related to pumpkins, they flower at night also, bearing white blossoms. They rely on insects such as moths for pollination, (I was mean though and wouldn't allow them to be fertilized by just anyone, I hand pollinated)
There are other cacti, day flowerers, who's bloom smells like rotting meat. They use flies for pollination.

:D

I was very lucky enough to see the bud earlier on in the day. I made the guess at a few more days before opening, or it was going to be a small flower. It was amazing to watch the images come in during the night and to finally see the animation. What a great job, Nettie.

This particular cactus is only a baby, just under 900mm tall, in the pot. I've not had any fruit off it as yet.
What I'd like to do with the next bud, (due to open in a couple of days) is to do a slow mo capture the changes of the bud itself. The way it was bulging and squirming before opening. LOL it had a belly full of stamen and petals
