View Full Version here: : Your Top Three Rock Classics.
Hi Everyone :hi:
Listening to some classic rock tracks this afternoon, I wondered what people would rate there top three at being.
Mine would have to be Khe Sanh (Cold Chisel), Sweet Child of Mine (Guns'n'Roses), Living on a Prayer (Bon Jovi).

Clayton,
We Built This City has got to be the single greatest travesty in the history of music. I cannot begin to express how infuriating that song is.
I'm sure if you were to Google it, many others would feel the same.
As for the list, too hard. Might contribute when I get home from work.

Only one Rock Band and for me. I love all their songs so I can't pick three.
Too Much Love Will Kill You is my classic.

Black Dog - Led Zep.
Paint it Black - The Stones
We Will Rock You - Queen
IMHO to qualify as 'Rock", and in addition to the usual criteria of loud, fast and moderately objectionable, the song must include a longish, virtuoso guitar solo that one inexplicably finds oneself humming, for no reason, many years later.

EPIC - Faith No More(1989) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERTT_sv8sV0) (Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_%28song%29))
La Grange - ZZ Top(1973) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3RLIU7T39I) - Back when they were good!
The Distance - Cake(1996) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__PU5CVSegg)
#'s 2 and 3 were just the next two that came to my head. But still great rock tracks.

Its difficult to hum a drum solo (tho' inadhadadavida is one of the exceptions). I'm not entirely sure I'm comfortable with "beating it out on anything handy". Particularly in public.
I did have a couple of mates at High School and Uni who were band drummers and they were always playing a solo! :)

Well, being a child of the 80's there isnt really much "rock" music that I like, regardless of anyone who thinks Michael Jackson was rock.....it wasnt. Oh well, I know I am a sad case....
OK, so for true rock music, and keeping in mind I am a pop 80's tragic, here are my favourites, strange as they may seem;
1) Nothing Else Matters - Metallica
2) In The End - Linkin Park
3) Behind Blue Eyes - Limp Bizkit
My top three rock music songs seem to be from thrash/metal bands....but, I think its coz they are truly awesome songs...
Cheers

Obviously. Otherwise 'Won't get fooled again' would be at the top of your list. :poke:
I'm not even goint to try and define a top 3, just throw three more names onto the list.
Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who on Who's Next (since the album was mentioned).
Kontact - Peter Gabriel on Peter Gabriel IV (German version)
21st Century Schizoid Man - King Crimson on In the Court of the Crimson King (but is it rock?)
Baby's On Fire - Brian Eno on Here Come the Warm Jets (Rolling Stone magazine once voted this as having the archtypical 1970's guitar solo).
Ahhh .... that's 4 .... whatever.

Bert,
Thank you so very, very much!! Not only did I enjoy watching the clip but it also brought back a flood of memories from my teenage years. 2SM's Rocktober on the steps of the Opera House during the 70's was an icon of teenage culture back then. The only thing I think that comes close these days is "The Big Day Out" series of concerts.
There were a few things that struck me in the clip. One was how well behaved the crowd was. There was some slight movement from people but on the whole they just stood and listened. I can only assume that they were either well brought up or they were stoned out of their heads! The other thing was how thin people looked. I could not see one overweight person on stage or in the crowd. Is this a reflection on our lifestyle today or merely a skewed sample of society from 40 odd years ago?
Anyway, that was a dead-set grouse clip! I think I'll go and watch my copy of Puberty Blues and get another big dose of my teenage years. Hell, I'm going to get that on Thursday night when I go and see the Doobie Brothers!!
Cheers,
Mario
PS Thanks Suzy for this truly enjoyable thread!
I'm very glad you're enjoying this thread Mario, I am too! :)
Puberty Blues- love that movie. So eighties & so very real of the time! Everything she wore, I wore, which makes for a really good memory lane trip. And the infamous panel vans - aye! I had two boyfriends that owned panel vans- my big brother was constantly having something to say. Have fun with Doobie Bros!
-----------------------------------------
So many great classics have been listed so far!
I realise of course our favourite songs change with our different moods, and being asked to pick three is a tough call, but I was worried by not listing a number of songs to give, that many posts would get over run by a load of songs removing the signficance from my requent - your absolute bare bones favourite. Three well chosen songs make this thread much easier to read through.
I see many of you are sneaking in extras - *tsk* *tsk*
Even though I've used the term rock classic, it can be folk, pop etc. I guess. The reason why I defined it to rock is that it would be harder to chose three favourites across all genres- that'd be painful (as if it isn't already).
Queen and Springsteen are very popular. No one has mentioned anything by Oasis yet.
I would have added Springsteen's Dancing in The Dark as that's my favourite pop track - but it doesn't belong here.
I have a great idea :D
a lot of songs listed here would make a fabulous playlist for an i-pod. Name of playlist, "IIS Members Rock Classics".

Mario in our little hamlet Eltham we used to go to lots of concerts by bands before they became famous. In the seventies Skyhooks used to play at a tin shed called Research Hall. I have strong memories of drinking from bottles and smoking at rock concerts in the area. Disposable cans had not been invented yet.
There a far more bands I wont bother to mention.
I am glad you liked that clip, I did! Yes we were slim because there was very little junk food available.
I first heard the EasyBeats in 1965 when I was working on a chook farm in the school holidays on my transistor radio. Yes I was reeeally cool!
I would never think the younger generation is worse than us as idiots have been saying just that for thousands of years!

Virtually every moring for the last month or so I've found myself singing The Weight during my morning shower. It's almost getting annoying. I don't know why it's stuck in my head. Perhaps because I haven't been sleeping well and keep waking up "feelin' 'bout half past dead". Cripple Creek is another song I keep singing to myself but not, I assure you, because I'm a drunkard. :innocent:

Hi Susy
I was drawn back to this thread after doing the last 3 of my classic rock shows
:rockband:on gove FM http://www.govefm.com.au with an 80's Classic rock vs The rest test.
The Results from GoveFM's facebook page:
Round 1: 80's Rock beat 80's pop hands down.
Round 2:80's Rock beat 90's rock and beyond by a healty margin.
Round 3:The test came last week with 80's vs 70's
At the end of the night 80's was well ahead, but it is now almost 50/50.
Thanks for your participation in my show Susy
This week I will do a best of the 70's & 80's show.
You are welcome to tune in to the steaming feed online & even make requests !

I give up !!
Just scrolled through that lot and had a gazillion music riffs barrel through my skull. Each list generated memories of tracks and albums and artists.
At present i am seriously enjoying.
Pink with her rendition of Led Zeps "Baby,I'm going to leave you' off the Aust Show on BluRay.
Jack White of White Stripes with 'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Gound' off 'It might get Loud' BluRay wth The Edge (U2) and Jimmy Paige (Led Zep).
And those venerable Rolling Stones on 'Shine a light', again a BluRay show at the ' Beacon' in NY with any damn song on it but maybe in particular Keith Richards Solo vocal of 'Baby, you've got the gold" with Ronnie on guitar.
Read Keith Richards book 'Life' if you are a Rock fan. It's an absolute stunner and insight into events around that time, not just Keith and the Stones but other artists and things. Excellent read !! :D
But like others have said these choices are all subject to change and mood. Jimmy Paige is the Maestro .... listen to 'The Battle of Evermore' ...
Better stop now, got some Led Zep, Jack White, Stones and Pink on the other PC and I think I need to start up the player while I work.
Excellent thread .. Ta
I'll be there Ian!! :D:D
Tonight between 7 & 9 - is that right?
How do I make requests - I have some.

Top three rock classics...
3. Bill Haley's Rock Around the Clock...
2. Led Zeppelin's movie The Song Remains The Same...
1. Dire Straits DVD.
I'd put seeing Dire Straits perform live in Sydney in 1986 at #1 (I was quick enough to score tickets) but the recording (there is one, of the final performance) is rare and the commercial DVD is better.

Wow, this is difficult.
1. Dream On - Aerosmith
2. No Quarter - Led Zeppelin (the version from The Song Remains The Same soundtrack is amazing).
3. Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones
And many more.

I was there, too! Best sound at a concert that I've heard. Pretty good performance as well. ;)
Top three? That's hard. So many great ones, and it changes with mood. So, today, without much thought:
1. Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody (actually, Queen could pretty much take the top three by themselves)
2. Led Zeppelin, Stairway to Heaven
3. Cold Chisel, Khe Sanh
And honourable mentions to AC/DC, It's a Long Way to the Top and Guns 'n' Roses, Sweet Child o' Mine.
Edit: Woohoo! One thousand (utterly cr*p) posts! :screwy:

All right - I'm in.
Not an easy task as I think just about everyone else has said. For my Australian top 3 rock songs, in no particular order and boy did I leave a heap of others out!
1. Choir Boys - Rendezvouz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ph-U2lLpITU
2. The Angels - Am I Ever Gonna See You Face Again? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7kYVjL2lps
3. Dragon - Young Years http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eOcrfRa1Fw
(I know - theses guys are Kiwis - but what the hey!)
My last choice is probably a little lite for a rock song but it's still one of my favorites. I spent 25 yrs playing these songs and many more like them as a DJ at a skating rink in Melbourne through the 80's, 90's and 00's and there was only ever one way to play them - loud.
PS For at least ten of those years the Angel's song was banned from family sessions. I wonder why? ;-)

PPS
How about these three for 'lite' rock
1. Russell Morris - Wings Of An Eagle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzZXKdY50y0
2. Ross Ryan - I Am Pegasus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFXYjp_Mlb8&list=PL679C82E336AEE6F0
3. Paul Kelly - Leaps And Bounds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9cTVJtsS9c
Ok I'm officially a little misty eyed here, time to put together a playlist for old time's sake
