Hi all,

I had a great Friday night out imaging with a few friends and my 22" SDM Dobsonian until dawn. I experimented with my Nikon D700 instead of Sony NEX-5 and the full frame sensor in D700 vignetted quite a lot with Paracorr type 2 and effective resolution is about 7MP (down from 12MP). Not sure there is any benefit in using a full frame camera instead of APS-C sized with my setup.

A few quick snapshots attached. Full size here:

Drive-through imaging is good fun but I would need a bit more subs to reduce noise. The only image I am reasonably happy with is the Tarantula nebula (NGC 2070).

M83 - 7x30 sec, ISO 3200 Nikon D700
NGC 4945 - 9x30 sec, ISO 3200 Nikon D700
NGC 4038 & 4039 - 7x30 sec, ISO 3200 Nikon D700
NGC 2070 - 9x30sec, ISO 3200 Nikon D700
NGC 6618 - 8x15sec, ISO 3200 Sony Nex 5

Cheers,
Alex

Alex,

Still a little work to be done but nevertheless these are pretty good.

Yes I agree. It was an experiment with a 36mm sensor in D700, but I think any gain in larger pixel sensitivity is negated by lower resolution of the middle section crop - 7MP vs 14MP in Sony Nex-5.

It's all part of learning and that's where IIS is a great resource :)

Cheers,
Alex
