A terrific set of images. I particularly like the composition of, and detail in, the 2nd image, showing the Sun spot near with limb with the Faculae.

How did the big C11 handle the Sun, but then wait a minute, the Pocklebonk Walls Observatory must have offered some shelter from the direct effects of the Sun?

im going to buy a c11 scope and i was wondering is it possible to observe the sun? What filter do you need? Any other tips?

Thanks Dennis. Once it's aimed at the sun the OTA is really shaded by the Thousand Oaks off axis filter. Usually the OTA is a bit hotter than ambient from being in the obs, but I have a little electric fan that I sit on the obs wall once I oipen the dome and I leave that blowing across the OTA.;) It helps to get rid the in tube thermals pretty quickly anyway.



To start off observing the sun you'll need a white light filter - either Baader film or a Seymour or Thousand Oaks type white light filter. Most filters for the C11 will probably be off axis rather than full aperture. Above 8" apparently it's rare to get good enough seeing to take benefit of a full sperture filter.

If you want to get into Ha observing, that's a whole other story in terms of cost.
