Flat with laptop screen and plastic party plate diffuser

Here's a flat using a laptop screen (a white frame created in GIMP - max screen brightness)with a (white) plastic party plate placed on top as a diffuser:P Focused the lens at infinity and held it against the back of the plate.

I noticed that the plate acts as filter and aligns RGB almost perfectly - without it there is a fair old split.

Hi Rowland,

When I used to shoot only with the DSLR and lens combination, this was my preferred way of taking flat frames.

I'd load up a new Photoshop document with a white background set to full screen, layer a couple of tissues over the front of the lens, ensure the lens was pointing parallel to the laptop screen and expose at ISO-100 at the aperture I shot my light frames, to give me a histogram (displayed in Digital Photo Professional) that was 1/3rd of the way across the X-axis.

It worked a treat.

I've tried a variety of methods including an EL panel/light box, dusk, towels, a variety of filter mediums, daylight flats. To date this is the most convenient and reliable. The stability of the light source is much better aside from purchasing a properly constructed light box.

My goal is to maximize the potential of what I have at hand without unnecessary effort.

Al's VLB is a Windows app - I'll have a look at something similar for Linux.
