regardless, football is the best game in the world
aussie "kick and giggle" is a joke
i was at my local pub a few months back and a couple of irish backpackers were ther watching an aussie rules game and he asked me what the score meant and it was something like 113 to 86 so i said to him it meant that one team had missed the main goal 113 times and the the other team had missed their goal 86 times! lets face it that is fairly close to the mark

I think soccer/football players are among the fittest and most talented sportsmen, but many of them do not play sportsmanlike. Taking dives to milk penalties has no place in any sport. You don't see them rolling around on the ground clutching their face if they take a spill while actually kicking a goal if it goes in, they jump up immediately and run around pulling their shirt over their head etc.
bartman
03-03-2011, 04:07 PM
And I agree. They run back and forth along that field and mentally have to be sharp ( which can also be a physically draining property)
In all sports....unfortunately
It just seems more fake in soccer ( yes football I know). In AFL people like Barry Hall, and the guy who bit the other guys ear and so on, aren't faking it.
Lets hope that doesn't happen in cricket or AFL......just cause it AIN'T....:P(cricket)

I've read Peter Fitzsimons telling players they should give themselves an uppercut because they deserve it (for being yobbos bogan or whatever) but I don't think this is what he meant. I wonder whether the player invented that trick or whether the coach is very thorough??

I enjoy watching all sports. Have to say that although I grew up with Rugby League here in Brisbane, over the last 5-10 years I have become a massive AFL convert. Love all aspects of it, spectating live and on the box. Just wish the idiots could show some discipline off the field, but that's another thread...

its a very daft game when the goals are as wide (just about) as the whole field and then they can be rewarded firstly by missing between the main posts and secondly they can actually win the game for gross inacuracy! a team can actually lose for scoring more proper goals! HELLOOO!!
and some of the best football matches have ended in draws, some can be stale of course but it can be a game between two amazing goalkeepers that keep clean sheets (no goals conceded that is)
you dont always have to have a clear winner in sport we even have an extraordinary number of draws in that ultimate dull sport cricket
ther i have opened up another can o worms!

Massive football fan myself, however the game is completely corrupt. Not just the players, but clubs, and the governing bodies.
For all we hear about stricter punishments being made, nothing is ever done about it, especially when its a star player from a big club, then the new rule is effectively ignored.
So who is the bigger fool? The player who dives and gets away with it, or the FA/FIFA/UEFA that continue to allow it? My view is the later.
Until there is an external review system for games in football, this will be a regular thing. Currently, only the referee in a game can make a decision, and its not always right. There should be an external review system (at bare minimum) that starts to crack down on cheating.
Just my opinion.
I grew up with AFL, still love the game, but there is something special about football in my opinion. Personally can't stand Rugby League, if ever a game was invented for TV, this was it... Union on the other hand is much better, skill is used rather than run straight and kick...

Football/Soccer is a different world to what it was 20yrs ago. With the advent of the Premier League in Britain they are more pampered pop stars than sportsmen now. I was brought up on the game and I am a huge Liverpool fan but the players of today sicken me with their attitudes. I couldnt believe what i was reading this week when Chelsea's Ashley Cole was given an internal 'dressing down' for bringing a high powered air rifle to the training ground and shooting a young trainee player. Any other profession in the world and he would have been bounced out of the workplace and the police involved.
Every sport is suffering from the same things though, AFL, NRL with their own off field problems too.
The clubs of all codes need to take these players from a young age, teach them how to interact with people in a normal way and not make them multimillionaire megastar schoolboys who think the world is their playground.

Another Liverpool fan, great to see mate!
But the attitude of players is disgusting, the mercenary mentality that has now come into the game is terrible. It is no longer about pride and love of the game/club, but the money.

Having played soccer for close to 20 years in Sydney, first grade Rugby League in Adelaide (yes they do play League there and it was a very tough comp back in '84!!!) and Golden Oldies Rugby Union in Brisbane I'd like to add my 2 cents worth to this thread...
Playing the game...
Soccer: As a winger it was always good when I scored.
Rugby League: As a winger it was always good when I scored.
Rugby Union: As a winger it was always good when I scored.
Watching the game...
Soccer: Can only watch games that I have an emotional attachment to, ie watching Australia. Anything else I struggle to keep the interest up for 90 minutes.
Rugby League: I'll watch anything I can. Despite what some people say it's not just about brute strength and there are many skills on display. A nicely timed pass, a beautiful dummy, a little flick pass. Exquisite!
Rugby Union: Nice to watch when the ball gets to the players with double digits on their backs. Unfortunately this rarely happens!
Cheers,
Mario
A nil-all draw can be more alot more exciting and tense to watch than a 150 to 30 drubbing....

don't knock it until you try it, anyone can kick a goal through open poles,
I've played Aussie rules and soccer and I know the ball skills for soccer outstrip those required for footy
each game has it's merits but soccer requires more tactical thinking and ball skills than Aussie rules thats why they can't use their hands
What skills?? They don't have any, that's why don't score anything.
Do you know why soccer fans riot? Coz their so damn bored.
Sorry, one-eyed AFL supporter
Well all I'll point out is that AFL is not played anywhere else in the world, and I'd say there's probably a very good reason for that. It just plain doesn't appeal to anyone. Whereas soccer is played everywhere, by people from all colours and creeds, and by everyone who can walk from toddlers upwards.
We here on IIS don't need to get shirty and claim to know all the answers. The world masses have already voted - with their balls so to speak ;)

Asukick for one to mention.....
AFL IS played on other continents...please google in your own time....
NFL is also another ball game that is played around the world and even here in Perth......
Don't dismiss other ball games just because they are less known in your territory.......
Sorry to bring this up, but how many deaths has there been in football (soccer) compared to AFL, NFL and Rugby - union-league .
( and I'm talking about pre-match, during the match and after the match...........not talking about players dying....)
Why?
I have my own thoughts:question:
Nill all ..... wooohoooo(sarc) would frustrate the heck out of me!

Not really the fault of the sport itself though is it? You might not like the game but millions do and the evidence is in the TV viewing figures and attendances at stadiums throughout the world so maybe there is your 'poll'?.
Unfortunately there are groups that have aligned themselves to football with the sole aim of causing trouble and there have been deaths associated with that but its certainly not because they are 'bored' at the game, it is because they want to do that.
Millions of people around the world enjoy football for the game itself. I'm not going to try and convert you as I know it would have as much effect as if you tried to convert me or another football fan to AFL or NRL, its not gonna happen.
You enjoy your game, we will enjoy ours and everyone is happy.

05-03-2011, 09:45 AM
If a draw is the proper result, why do they insist on the farce called a shootout? Because the "fans" (a term including those thugs who go to the stadium to have a drunken fight before, during and after the game) can't stand a non-result.
This attitude has infected other games like the NRL and AFL, but at least there if the score is still tied after extra time it will stand.
Draws in games where they "must" have a result allow all the profiteers to make more money with the replay. We couldn't possibly have two "best" teams.
Other games have violent supporters too. They haven't yet taken to burning down the stands full of people to relieve the boredom.
Andrew
A bit of an biased comparison. Soccer would have more players worldwide than the AFL has fans worldwide, and many of those players are in countries that certainly aren't as 'moderate' as Australians, who have taken measures such as sending the riot squad to every NRL bulldogs game at times. I guess by your definition the NRL must be a boring game since it needs the riot squad present? Heck, the Australian open tennis must be boring as well since the fans seem to like fighting there too!

Just to fix this piece of ignorance, penalty shootouts are only used in the knockout phases of tournaments (World Cup etc.) where a result is required to determine which team advances. In the group stages draws are allowed, as is the case in all leagues, basically nearly all games.
I don't understand the 1-0 or 0-0 arguments from people saying its boring. Are the only interesting parts of your games when they score? A good (decent quality and where you have an interest in the team) football game is interesting for 90 minutes, goals are just special moments. A tie also doesn't have to feel like a draw, especially if you were not expected to win.
A 1-1 draw for Australia against Brazil, how boring that would be right?
It has nothing to do with small Australian mindedness. I love American football. Soccer is the most mind-numbing game I have watched. Even more boring than chess.
Wow realy? 70% of the worlds population?
Got a reliable source to back that up?
