Hi all
I have had my Obsession in storage, and after reassemble have found the bearings are very sticky, jerky.
I have had a look at them and am pretty sure they are just dirty.
What is the recommendation for cleaning these with. I have read that metho is Ok and then wipe with a silicon polish, is this Ok
Thanks

Cleaning with metho is fine. Do it first though. Then, a good quality car wax is excellent for bearings. It is the stuff recommended by the Obsession mob too. It is applied to the laminate surface of the bearings, not the Teflon. It will help disolve and clean oils and dirt that the metho alone just can't. Any more specialized polish isn't worth the expense as good car waxes HAVE this silicon material in them. You can then easily justify the expense of a $30+ bottle of car wax to the missus, ;) , even if the car doesn't even get a whiff of the stuff.

Give the Teflon pad a clean too with metho. No wax on these!

I just did this to the altitude bearings of my 17.5" scope. It had been one year since the last touch up with the car wax - what a difference! I'll be doing the azimuth bearing this weekend.

Take your time with the cleaning with both the metho and the wax. The result is worth a little more time and effort.

I use the Turtle wax that comes in a small tub, and is scooped out. Just a little is needed.

Sounds good to me. Start with a brush/cloth to remove major loose dust etc. If you can completely disassemble so that you have the teflon pads away from the surface (not sure if you are talking about Alt or Azi or both), you will be able to do the best job.

A good automotive silicon polish applied to the "rough" surface (Ebony Star or similar) will do wonders.

Thanks Eric and Mental
Have cleaned the bearings with metho and will apply some wax
The large flat material under the rocker box, that the bearing rotates on, has been cleaned, but cannot get to the three contacts. I have srayed these with metho and let dry, and then apply the wax
Thanks for the help
