Do you think that the general chat forum is living up to it's description:

"Talk about anything and everything in here!"

Interested to see how people feel about this.

You can talk about anything you like until it is deleted.

True, in that regard it lives up to the description

No the forum does not cater for the pointless and inane rubbish. Come to think of it, most of what is in here is pointless and inane. Maybe the whole concept should be banned.

Quite right,

General chat is for for discussing topics of a general nature that are not necessarily directly related to astronomy itself.

Topics must have a valid point and purpose . Threads creating purely for the purpose of inane dribble will be deleted.

P.S. Site policy will not be dictated by spammers and agitators.

excuse my ignorance please, but what is a "sticky"?

Sticky is when the thread stays at the top of the forum even if no one has posted recently. Stays in the same spot forever.

The officals rules from Feb 06 state:

"Please keep threads on-topic and try to avoid spam or "chit-chat" within the specialised forums. We don't want the forums to become stale with no sense-of-humour, but we also want people to be able to find the information they're after without having to wade through a lot of chatter. Basically we're aiming for an appropriate middle ground, just use your common sense."

"The "General Chat" forum should be used for all off-topic posts that don't belong in the specialised forums."

So you are telling us that from FEB a tread that has the point of being funny and only applies to a small ground of people who like astronomy and like to laugh, will not be locked? :confuse2:

I hope the goalposts are not being moved again.

According to the new rules, David P. should re-post his "lighten up" thread after the 2nd of FEB. I thought it was funny and the point was too lighten up (as stated in the title).

If I am wrong, please modify the new rules so we know what is acceptable. Maybe that light hearted threads will not be tolerated in general chat or something less confronting like - "jokes are not a valid topic", I don't know. I thought Dave wasn't doing much wrong, but he did get it wrong.

This thread should not be here as it is specific to website feedback. Please see the thread in there.

All agitators and spammers should leave. Well that means the top 30 or so excluding 1 or 2 need to pack their bags. You don't get to 2000, 1000 or 6000 posts without spamming a little. You most certainly get to 4000 it seems by spamming a lot.

We may be seen as agitators, but it was us who posted thread after thread and post after post to create the life of these forums. We were needed, now it seems were not.

Personally, I think the rules are being breached all the time by all. No wonder I resigned.

I feel for the moderators, they are caught in between a rock and a hard place. They were given specific orders to clamp down on spam. However, while inconsistency prevails there will be descent in the ranks.

Being new to the forum:confuse2: , i am intimidated by the politics and will most certainly behave from now on. Better still, just stick to the scientific stuff and not tread on any big toes.:o
