hi all

well i've had a bit of a scare!!!! early on saturday morning awaking around 1.30am with shocking chest and gut pains i couldn't seem to make it go away they weren't up into my left arm but it was scary, heading to the hospital at around 3.00am with the pain increasing and the wife starting to get a bit panicky they stuck cables all over the body and thank goodness the ticker was just fine giving me goodness knows what the throat and gut was going numb and the pain started to ease.it was something to do with the assofficuss don't know how to spell it and stomach acids which iv'e had trouble with before since a teenager but never to this degree.they've got me on drugs etc to settle things down but wow it frightened me i thought that it might have been the end.so as i get back on track its a full body check up and to see what has caused this!!!!!.the people in the hospital were absolute wonderful and can't praise them enough..

a big wake up call!!!!!!

Good to hear it's just your oesophagus Mozzie. Everyone needs a wake-up call now and then. Blokes often ignore these signs. Just remember that a full checkup might include the "Hopoate Handshake"

Mozzie, "Reflux Oesophagitis", it would seem, also known as "Gastroesophageal reflux disease" (GERD). Everyone thought i was having a heart attack the first time I had a major episode back in 1982.

You do want to treat/manage it - in certain circumstances it can lead to "Barrett's Oesophagus" which can lead to cancer in the lower oesophagus. Not good!

Endoscopy next (enjoy!) which will see exactly what is going on at the sphincter between oesophagus and stomach. You should see a nice colour piccie showing the status of inflamation of the lower oesophagus when you come out of the anesthetic.

For me, keeping weight down, some care with choice of foods and drinks, avoiding eating a lot shortly before I go to bed and a Nexium (esomeprazole) tablet a day keeps it managed. Perhaps I'll go for the surgery one day to fix my lazy sphincter.

Anyone getting regular and painful heartburn - I highly recommend that you see your Doctor and get it diagnosed and treated.

Whoa mozzie ... pretty scary, hope all is OK now.
The old tummy can certainly mimic heart pains, so hope all gets sorted.
Eric sounds like ... hes been there, done that. :help:

A little googling will give you plenty of information on the condition - including what to eat and not etc.

But that is just to supplement the info you get from your Dr and specialist after they have a good look.

Glad to hear all is OK, Pete. Hopefully, full tests will reveal that you can be treated for whatever it is that ails you.

Health problems, suck!

Of course, let's not jump ahead until you have the actual diagnosis from your Dr.

Ah Mozzie,

Glad to hear you were sorted out at hospital pretty sharpish!

We all hear various horror stories from time to time, but surprisingly when the Sh$% hits the fan, how good the service seems to be.

Listen carefully to the wife, although as Doug tells me, she does a pretty good job of looking after you and hopefully you'll get what ever your problem is under control.

Take it easy for a few days. That skypod must be causing some problems, I'd be happy to look after for it for you!

Hey I also have to take omeprazole for GERD but mine is caused by CF. On the days I forget to take it I can really notice the difference.

Boy, I didn't know a case of heavy duty heartburn could be so bad. All the symptoms sound so much like the ticker giving up, I can see why you were worried. And having to go to Emergency at 3.00 am on a Sat morning - I don't know what it's like where you are but I've been told that that is rush hour here.

Amazing what you learn on this site. I now know that there is a difference between the oesophagus and the assofficuss. One is connected to your mouth but I'm not sure about the other. :P :D

Glad to hear it wasn't the ticker, Mozzie.

I've had endoscopy, it's no big deal 'cos you're sedated when they do it.
I don't remember a thing.

A tip for you guys, I had a massive heart attack at 35yo. Believe me you will know if you are having one !

If you are having chest pain and you think it is a heart attack do the following:

First off tell someone if you are alone(just incase it is)

Second, get a cold glass of water and swallow a small mouthful, if the pain eases somewhat, or changes significantly it's not a heart attack. Or just swallow like you where taking a drink if you can't get water, etc.

Thirdly, do some streatching of your arms, legs, etc.

If by doing any of those things eases the pain then it's not a heart attack. If you are having a heart attack no matter what you do the pain NEVER eases up or goes away for a second or 2. The heart dosn't stop beating(in this case if the pain goes away it would be a bad thing !) so it is a constant pain that nothing will ease, except the Morphine, and/or Nitro they will give you at the hospital. The pain gets a little more intense in rhythm with each heart beat.

I have, on and off, a similar problem to you Mozzie and after the heart attack I had many a scare untill I worked out for myself the above info which will hopefully put some minds at ease in the future. But if your really not sure don't risk it and get to a Hospital ASAP. I was lucky and only 10% of my heart died, which you can never get back btw.
